I love both types. I also love "loyal steed" in the sense of not animals that are ridden but animals that are work animals in some way. Like, villains who have wild beasts of some kind who they train to be completely vicious to everyone else. But the villain also completely adores their monster pets, spoils them, lets them sleep in his/her bed, and is the one person they don't attack.

DA - This is the dynamic I always imagined with Ursula and Flotsam & Jetsam whenever they had downtime. Her being so pleased to show them the eel-head lair they’re all moving into, that she totally didn’t trick some now-withered mer-schmucks and a few nicely chewy hammerheads into building.
