175. Thank the fucking lord. I completely agree with you. I mean I can see someone going through a dry period, but not being attracted to anything, ever? I think it's a load of shit.

Re: 122, 127, 131, 162, 166, 167, 175, 183

[identity profile] jaclynhyde.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Repeating my comment from above, do you also believe sexual orientations other than your own don't exist? (http://www.asexuality.org/home/)

Re: 122, 127, 131, 162, 166, 167, 175, 183

[identity profile] whatthebec.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I absolutely believe that other sexual orientations other than mine do exist. However, I do not think that half of the people that say they are asexual actually are.
I have never come in contact with a true asexual. I have, however, come in contact with people who have SAID they were asexual. The people I know, after a few months, would be "over it" and dating someone or having sex.

I also find it a little hard to believe that someone has never been attracted to ANYTHING sexually in their entire life. But I guess I shouldn't talk about something I do not know.

Re: 122, 127, 131, 162, 166, 167, 175, 183

But I guess I shouldn't talk about something I do not know.
Pretty much, yeah.

There are people out there who say they're asexual, but it really is just a dry spell. There are also people out there who say they're bisexual for a short period of time and, after that, say they're completely straight. Does bisexuality not exist because people overuse the term (and that's not even touching the issue of just labeling yourself how you see yourself)?

Re: 122, 127, 131, 162, 166, 167, 175, 183

[identity profile] whatthebec.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Sexuality is a difficult thing to pin-point, at least in my opinion.
My "sexuality" has changed quite a bit over the past few years and I guess that I am being a bit hypocritical to say that asexuality doesn't exist because I do believe that bisexuality and homosexuality and other sexuality's are valid.
Asexuality is just such a hard thing for me to grasp. I am attracted to just about everyone and I cannot fathom never having that feeling.

Re: 122, 127, 131, 162, 166, 167, 175, 183

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Just to put this in perspective: Not believing that half the people on the internet who claim to have Aspergers are telling the truth does not disprove the existence of aspergers.

I understand your skepticism and to an extent I share it, but I think that just because you don't understand it doesn't mean you should say that no one can possibly be like that. Why should you expect to come into contact with someone who is asexual? I can't imagine it's a very common thing.

Re: 122, 127, 131, 162, 166, 167, 175, 183

[identity profile] whatthebec.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I never said that I expected to come in contact with someone who is asexual. I said I have come in contact with individuals who have claimed to be asexual.

Re: 122, 127, 131, 162, 166, 167, 175, 183

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
And I said that doesn't disprove the existence of asexuality.

Re: 122, 127, 131, 162, 166, 167, 175, 183

[identity profile] whatthebec.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Asexuality can exist, I just doubt the validity it has in this society.

Re: 122, 127, 131, 162, 166, 167, 175, 183

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think you said what you meant to say there, so I'll just say that society can certainly be a great deterrent from sexuality and leave it at that.

Re: 122, 127, 131, 162, 166, 167, 175, 183

[identity profile] fromyourashes.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Part of me thinks, Ok. They've been saying the same thing about bisexuality, and I get pissed about that...but it's just not. Especially given the nature of that particular secret, ya know? You're asexual, but you want porny fic? No, ridiculous. Maybe it's because what I learned about that word in school is completely different than what it's being used for now, I just cannot ever agree with any human being who isn't developmentally disabled claiming asexuality.

Re: 122, 127, 131, 162, 166, 167, 175, 183

[identity profile] whatthebec.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the word asexual is being thrown around too much.
I mean if you want porny fic of something then you OBVIOUSLY are not asexual.

Re: 122, 127, 131, 162, 166, 167, 175, 183

[identity profile] fromyourashes.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously. I haven't had sex for around six or seven years, and have absolutely no desire to, either. The only two people I've felt any kind of attraction to have been celebrities, LMAO, not "real" people. But I'm not asexual. I just don't feel like getting laid, that's all. Do we really need ridiculous terms that make no sense for everything?

Re: 122, 127, 131, 162, 166, 167, 175, 183

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Why is it "just not" the same as bisexuality? Because you can understand bisexuality and not asexuality?

Re: 122, 127, 131, 162, 166, 167, 175, 183

[identity profile] fromyourashes.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Why is it not the same thing as bisexuality? Because asexuality is, from my understanding, the complete lack of desire for anything sexual. There has been little research done on asexuality, and very few people claiming to be asexual, whereas it's just the opposite for bisexuality.

My saying that asexuality and bisexuality are not the same things has nothing to do with my understanding or lack thereof, and everything to do with what facts are readily available to further my knowledge of this particular subject.

*shrugs*
I'm in my mid-twenties and I have yet to feel any sexual attraction towards anyone. I've had more than a few experiences of having intense emotional attraction to various individuals (and the occasional fictional character or celebrity), but no matter how much I find myself wanting to spend all my time with the person in question, the desire to do anything sexual with them just isn't there.

It's certainly possible that I just haven't found the right situation or the right person yet... and if that's the case, I'd be willing to revise my assessment. In the meantime, rather than going around in furtive mental circles worrying that something must be wrong with me, I'm going to identify with the orientation that's currently most accurate and get on with my life.

As for Amat... if I were really interested in it just for the porn, I'm pretty sure that I could come up with a character less severely unsuited for it (and more aesthetically pleasant) than Psycho Mantis.

Of everyone else who's had something to say on this subject, your comments are the most interesting, and I'm gonna have to apologize if I've offended you. At least you're open to other possibilities, and I hope you are able to find that kind of connection with someone in the future.

But there IS nothing wrong with you. We're all different, and you might not be able to identify with people around you, but that doesn't mean you're not just as normal as everyone else. There is no pure and right definition for normal in relation to humanity, in my opinion. Everyone is different, everyone is the same, if that makes any sense to anyone who isn't me.

True.

True as that is, that was a lesson I hadn't yet learned when I was a teenager and wondering why I seemed to be the only one who wasn't turned on by anything or anyone. Discovering the asexuality community online, learning that there were other people who shared my experiences to some degree or another, helped me to get over that.

Maybe a lot of self-identified asexuals are just going through a phase... but the idea and the community can still have value for them at the time. They were there for me when I needed them, and ultimately, that means more to me than whether or not I or they still identify as asexual 40 years from now.

A little frustrated, perhaps, but not offended. I've heard worse. Thanks for the well-wishes and for your own willingness to be open to other possibilities and ideas.

But many plants *aren't* asexual. What do you think flowers are for? /smartass
