Re: 117
Re: 180
Like I said in the letter I sent, I loved how Avatar was a breath of fresh air to all of the all or nearly all white casts I'm used to seeing. Therefore, I wanted to see people of color in the roles for the Avatar movie. Since I'm not (and not seeing Shyamalan's promise of unknown actors practically thrown out the window), I want to say something. It's a long history that one would think would've ended by now, but since it hasn't, we're fighting.
And hopefully, if we succeed in out letter writing campaign, other companies will take notice of what's going on and stop their unintentional racism as well. Maybe I'm too optimistic, but that's what I'm hoping for.
TL;DR. I agree, and it's a long road ahead even if we succeed in the letter writing campaign.
Re: 180
And I think that people's anger is directed toward those who're saying horrible racist nonsense on message boards, not those who sit quietly aside and stay out of it.
Re: 180
You seem to be trying very hard to make this secret about you personally -- who knows, maybe it is, maybe you have the OP friended, I don't know. So here, I will make it personal: there is nothing reasonable about this casting decision, there is nothing reasonable about making excuses for it, there is nothing reasonable about telling other people they shouldn't be upset about it.
And you aren't actually included in my statements about "staying out of it." You have involved yourself by participating in this conversation.
Re: 180
More effective ways. All right.
Other than "nothing," what exactly would you have people do about this issue? They're writing letters to the studio and the producers, they're contacting media outlets, they're notifying civil rights watchgroups, they're getting into the trenches of fandom and trying to argue their position with those who would ignore or dismiss it.
What else are they supposed to do?
Because if you have some ideas I would completely seriously and sincerely love to hear them.
Re: 180
Like what?
I'm not trying to be a jerk, here. It's just that institutionalized problems like racism in media are slippery and subtle and hard to get a hold on. Part of the reason so many people are getting involved in the specific issue of the Airbender casting -- many of whom aren't even fans of the show -- is that it's something concrete and specific and easy to explain, something we can all point to and say, "This? This is not okay."
Re: 180
I don't know what to do about it, but I can see on both sides why people keep explaining themselves. If someone posts to say why they don't think this campaign is useful, or that it's hypocritical or silly, people are eager to explain why they don't think that's true.
But I can share your annoyance with bingo card use in fandom. They're good when all the arguments on them are specious and the person can explain why (like the racism card, for instance) but I've definitely seen bingo cards made for fandom things where people seem to think that just because you put an argument on a bingo card it means the argument is bad and...no. by that logic a racist could just make up a bingo card with things like "White people are not inherently better than PoCs."
180
Yes, Hollywood is racist every single day. However, it's hard to protest institutionalized racism and racism by omission. But when we have popular media that is populated by demonstrably non-white characters and they are summarily white-washed-- that's something that can be protested. That's a chance to say "I'd love to see more characters of color, we HAD a significant number of characters of color on this show, and you shouldn't change the face of that show to white-wash it."
Is it treating symptoms? Sure, but it's also a baby step in the right direction towards depicting non-white characters in non-pigeonholed main and major roles in media. The fact that the tv show wasn't white washed was a step in the right direction, a lot of people see the white-washing of the movie as a step back, and we're agitating not to take that step back.
TL;DR Not all antiracist movements are about big steps. Sometimes it's about just pushing to not lose the heroes you've got. If you think that's being high and mighty... that's your malfunction, I guess.
180 OP
(Anonymous) 2009-01-17 12:43 am (UTC)(link)I'm fighting against this issue because it's particularly egregious. I know that there are lots of problems with lots of different shows and movies. But I have to start somewhere. And I'm not a network executive, so all I can do is treat the symptoms. I can't fight this at the source because I don't have that kind of power. I'm not sure many people do, really.
I don't know why you're projecting this weird attitude onto me. All I said is that I wish I could talk about this issue more without people (like you?) telling me to shut up and stop ruining their fun. And I made a side comment that nasty, cynical secrets here just make me more mad. What's wrong with that?
