Sometimes when you see them having conversations with each other they will bring it up. They also visit each others' house, you see them hanging out in the plaza, etc. It also depends on how close their houses are. I've found that my villagers have more interactions if their houses are near each other (creating a resident area) than when I had them be in different places all over the island.

That makes me happy to know, one of my favorite villagers lives all the way on the north end of my island yet she visits my other two favorites who live in the south all the time.

Aw that's sweet and warms my heart! <3 When I still didn't have my villagers residence set my villagers barely talked and the ones that did I ended up making them neighbors.

Maybe similar animals become friends faster. I have Blair and Caroline and they were already visiting each others house despite Blair being fairly new to the island.
