I think the latching onto them ended up over-inflating their importance which, when I did watch The Old Guard, really disappointed me by how little we really got about them. They felt kind of low-key/background for a couple that got kidnapped and tortured to me.

DEFINITELY. I am a fan of the ship, but they are minor characters. I mean, it's pretty typical to overstate the importance of slash ships, but still. (At least they're actually canon, which many over-hyped couples can't claim...)
