112. Uh, I don't think you've got much to worry about there. (Now, crappy white actors, maybe...)

131. Jesus fucking Christ on a cracker, if you're going to make your secret that long, at least make it readable (or if it's going to be that unreadable, at least keep it short).

145. I'd be more annoyed by the leaving "aru" in, personally. I mean, sticking "aru" at the end of every sentence is the way Japanese series portray a stereotypical Chinese person speaking stereotypically bad Japanese. Surely that's not a concept that's impossible to convey in English. (Though maybe they're doing it to be less offensive?)

154. Uh, no, not everyone in American (anime) fandom wants to be Japanese. Thanks for the sweeping generalization.

...but you can tell what they mean. What's up with the grouch?

Yeah, I overreacted. Sorry, I should probably not say anything on the internets when in a bad mood.

I think they keep it untranslated mostly because China would be talking like Yoda.

The only problem I could foresee with translating it is that the specific kind of verbal tic (where there's a word at the end of the sentence) just doesn't happen 90% of the time in English because of how English sentences are structured. This isn't just a problem in Hetalia fandom, either. A loooot of series have that problem. (One that comes to mind specifically is Teddie from Persona 4: he added 'kuma' to the end of his sentences in Japanese, but for English they had him make lots of bear puns.) For a lot of the verbal tics out there you pretty much have to re-structure every sentence to fit it in smoothly, and that's something I would expect of a professional translation, not a fan translation.

Yeah, I do realize that it's difficult! I am a fan translator myself, and I've had to deal with that kind of verbal tic before (hi there, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni!). But even though I might not always do a great job of it, I prefer to find some way to translate, if not the tic itself, the impression that the tic is supposed to convey (if that makes sense). It's just a matter of personal preference, I guess, and I probably shouldn't have gotten so ranty about it.

Is that the commonplace in fandom? I only ask because I've never really talked about it with anyone before, so I never knew it was an issue. Personally I have no preference one way or another.

It's more common to leave them untranslated, actually -- which is all the more reason why I shouldn't get worked up about it, I guess.
