152: She gave him the cold shoulder because she seriously preferred the gay guys from Gravitation to him.

Or maybe she just wasn't that interested in him?

Re: 152

(Anonymous) 2009-01-18 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, seriously. So she didn't want to date somebody for whatever reason. Isn't the brother happily enough married that the girl still has to be villified for not dating him? I suppose awesome!brother never ever wasn't interested in someone who was interested in him? Hell, maybe the girl herself is gay. The anger at women not in relationships is pretty creepy.

Re: 152

[identity profile] utukki.livejournal.com 2009-01-18 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
It's not just that she wasn't interested in him. She wasn't interested in any flesh-and-blood guy, preferring to swoon over anime guys instead.

Look. I was alone for 35 years, and quite happy and content. Heavy duty into fandom, and the anime guy I swooned over was boy-type Ranma. Had 2 cats even. I even looked forward to being a crazy cat lady. As fate would have it, I met someone, got married and had kids.

Being married didn't suddenly make me a worthwhile person. I was just fine for the 35 years I was alone.

But anyone who actually prefers anime guys to real men is pathetic. It's lazy. The reason is that no real man can ever measure up to some idea. Real relationships take WORK. They are HARD. There's the possibility of being hurt, suffering real pain. But the joy that comes from such a relationship is that much more rewarding. It takes a lot of effort to make a relationship, especially a marriage, work.

I don't look down on girls who like anime guys. I'm one of them. The ones I find pathetic are the ones who like anime guys because they prefer fantasy to reality. They are too afraid of getting hurt, or putting in effort to a realationship to deal with real people. So they lust and swoon and gush over a guy who can't touch them, talk to them or interact with them in anyway. Nice and safe.

And pathetic.

The very fact the you assume older woman alone = crazy cat lady tells me that you don't really think it's for people (or just women? I dunno) to be alone, like you say later in this post. Seriously, if you were "fine" alone, why did you think you were going to be a "crazy cat lady"?

Re: 152

[identity profile] utukki.livejournal.com 2009-01-18 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
"Crazy cat lady" is a stereotype, and I had fun with it. I certainly didn't, and still dont hold any negative connotation with it, because I don't actually believe "crazy" is a bad thing. Eccentric is fun. Some of my best friends are "crazy cat ladies" and they wouldn't be offended in the least over the lable. If I were to stereotype myself now, I'd say I'm the "crazy old mom who can't be a crazy cat lady because my kids are allergic, sure hope they grow out of it!"

Re: 152

[identity profile] fenm.livejournal.com 2009-01-18 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
Ok, but you do realize most people DON'T see it as positive, right? So, when that's the first thing you say, can you see why I might think you're saying being alone is a bad thing?

Re: 152

[identity profile] utukki.livejournal.com 2009-01-18 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
:boggle: Are you seriously incapable of gleaning a positive connotation, even a tongue-in-cheek affection, in the context of what I said? Or are you that desperate to nitpick?

Context is everything. And then I even clarified when you seemed confused. And you still want to make it an issue?

Re: 152

[identity profile] dwinghy.livejournal.com 2009-01-18 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
You did say "Pretty pathetic" WRT the girl who GASP turned down your brother. Not much tongue in cheek affection to be found in that phrase. This namby pamby backpedalling is painful to watch; either admit that "pathetic" is a harsh way to judge someone you know nothing about (other than the fact that they OMG TURNED DOWN YOUR AWESOME BROTHER!!!!) or just woman up and say "yeah, I think people like that are pathetic, even some of my friends".

Re: 152

[identity profile] utukki.livejournal.com 2009-01-18 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
You're looking at the wrong phrase. Hell, you're looking at the wrong post. There was no affection meant there. I'm not backpedaling. And I'm happy to "woman up" and say YES. People like that are pathetic.

Worse, people like you who don't like what I say and try to nitpick prose over it because you don't have an adequate response? Pathetic.

"nitpick prose all over it"? WTF?

[identity profile] dwinghy.livejournal.com 2009-01-18 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
For Christ's sake pick an opinion and stick with it. I THINK THOSE PEOPLE ARE PATHETIC EXCEPT WELL NOT ALL OF THEM I MEAN IF THEY'RE ABUSED OR SOMETHING HOMINA HOMINA DON'T LOOK AT THAT PHRASE THAT I WROTE LOOK AT THIS OTHER PHRASE THAT I WROTE. You were backpedaling all over the place.
And I just think it's hilarious that someone who didn't even go on a date until she was 35 is calling ANYONE "pathetic", because, wow. Pot, kettle. I realize that anything that calls you on your douchebaggery is going to be considered "inadequate" in your eyes, because you're a douchebag, but Jesus, get some perspective here.

Re: "nitpick prose all over it"? WTF?

[identity profile] utukki.livejournal.com 2009-01-18 01:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I dated for 20 years. Real people. Turned down three proposals because I'm picky, but that's how I ended up eventually getting married. Funny how that works.

And man, you've certainly given me perspective. I'd forgotten just how rabid and RAWR RAWR RAWR fangirls can be, especially if you poke a stick at their secret shame. As for "backpedaling," I was trying to be compassionate towards those with extenuating circumstances who can't bear to live in the real world, but you know what? Screw it. You're all equally pathetic. My mom survived years of physical and sexual abuse but she was strong enough to deal with it and move on and form healthy relationships with flesh and blood human beings.

I just can't respect anyone who'd rather bury their head in the metaphorical sand than try to cope. You know, I could even understand fantasizing about an actor or actress. At least they are real people. But a drawing? Wow.

And if I hurt your feelings with my opinion?

CRY MOAR.

I don't know you. I do know--and so do you, I'll wager--that most people use the term "crazy cat lady" as a bad thing. Not to mention that you yourself lashed out at someone by referring to her "collection of cats". So, added altogether, no, I couldn't really see you using the term "crazy cat lady" as a positive. I know better now, but given that your usage is a rare one, and the exact opposite of what most people mean, I think you can understand my reaction, right?

Or are you that desperate to nitpick?

You say "nitpick" like it's a bad thing...

And then I even clarified when you seemed confused.

I'm not confused. I was asking you if you can understand why people might not get what you mean, considering the terminology you used.

Re: 152

[identity profile] bridget-x-alena.livejournal.com 2009-01-18 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
Not all people who prefer fantasy to reality are pathetic. Fantasy is a way to ESCAPE reality, and for some of us, there's some pretty bad shit happening here in the real world. Yes, some people are afraid of getting hurt by RL people, but there's probably good reason for that. Therefore, they escape into their fantasy-world.

Re: 152

[identity profile] utukki.livejournal.com 2009-01-18 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
Good grief, will you people stop picking a single sentence out of what I say and put the whole thing in context? There's nothing wrong with escapism, especially for someone trying to deal with bad shit in the real world.

But for someone who isn't dealing with real life abuse or other extenuating circumstances, escapism to the exclusion of reality completely? Oh yeah, that's really healthy. Insert roll eyes here.

Re: 152

(Anonymous) 2009-01-19 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
Cry moar, you said something stupid and people called you on it. That's not nitpicking.

Re: 152

[identity profile] malik-chan.livejournal.com 2009-01-18 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
Fuck you for saying I'm lazy for preferring anime characters over real men. I may have a preference for them, but I don't have my head shoved up my ass expecting one to come riding up to me on a white horse, ready to ride into the sunset. Many of us have a preference for the impossible, real or imaginary, and some people are happy in their fantasy world, knowing they will be alone. It is not lazy nor is it crazy, some people fear rejection so bad that they can forgo a romantic relationship with a real person because they can't stand getting hurt.

Oh, and that crazy cat lady comment? Sorry, but not all of us like cats and some of us like the companionship animals have to offer, they will not reject you for the way you look or your personality.

Re: 152

[identity profile] utukki.livejournal.com 2009-01-18 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
Fuck me?

.... are you coming on to me? Wow, that might just be a step in the right direction! Good job!

Re: 152

Jesus christ you are terrible at this

Re: 152

[identity profile] dwinghy.livejournal.com 2009-01-18 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
I know, right? It's like watching a trainwreck. A trainwreck that's struggling in vain to be funny.

Re: 152

[identity profile] malik-chan.livejournal.com 2009-01-18 06:24 am (UTC)(link)
You are so right. They just can't stand that people dare prove them wrong.

Re: 152

[identity profile] utukki.livejournal.com 2009-01-18 12:58 pm (UTC)(link)
You can't prove an opinion wrong. And I think you're pathetic. Now go cuddle your oh-so-scary demon bishi for comfort.

Oh wait. You can't. Unless you have his image on a body pillow or something. I hear they make those now.

Re: 152

[identity profile] malik-chan.livejournal.com 2009-01-18 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Your opinion says women with fantasy men are pathetic and lonely, but many women with fantasy men are not pathetic and are probably married! Opinion is not fact! Thus I have proved you wrong! NEXT!

And demon bishi? See the guy in my icon? He is not a demon, he's actually all human! Oh, I would mention my search for a boyfriend, but I must be some walking anachronism to you, not to mention pathetic for daring to fantasize about someone who isn't real!

I'm not some desperate otaku like you seem to think.
