Sailor Moon isn't very good though. It's cute but the writing is extremely cookie cutter.

That's just, like, your opinion, man.

And Sailor Moon is 90s, not 80s.

I meannnnn it's not like I hate SM but watch any magical girl show made since and you'll notice the genre has evolved way beyond it. Princess Tutu, Doremi, Precure, Madoka, etc.

...Madoka takes a lot directly from Sailor Moon tho, just makes it dark and depressing.

(Like literally, Soul Gems are just star seeds outside the body for one)

...so? Just because a 30-year-old IP came up with a thing doesn't mean it's the best at utilizing it.

Madoka used it for shock value and that alone tho.

I like Madoka but it isn't even GOOD, it's a misogynistic piece of crap about how young girls don't really know what they want and how their dreams are all self-destructive.

Disagree. Madoka is about girls growing up in a misogynistic world that doesn't let them ask for what they really want. And when they try, the powers that be interpret those dreams into the worst possible thing.

The girls knew what they wanted. A misogynistic society told them they had to ask gently, and then they were punished for doing so.

IMO.

Ah, another one who read that out-of-context Urobuchi quote.

Madoka is a good story that's neither feminist nor misogynistic.

I'd say Madoka is a good story that has both valid feminist and misogynist interpretations.

"Beyond" it is such a stretch.

Yeah, Different Stuff Happened. Period.

If Thing A has roots in Thing B but goes further with the ideas in more challenging ways, it can be said to have moved beyond its originator. I don't think that's dismissive of Thing B and its quality to point out works that evolved from it.
