Now I'm curious as to what it is you revisited. Because it does sound like a weird take from the hero, unless it was supposed to be an intentional "Hey, look, the hero is wrong and has to learn a lesson." (but from your reaction it doesn't seem to be the case.)

That seems like something that depends on the situation. What is being taken? In general, you shouldn't go through life only taking everything and never giving anything, but I don't think every single individual situation of taking something requires giving or giving up something in return.

the only times i can think of a hero being selfish like that is when the villain is trying to force them to choose between like, saving the world or saving the girl and the hero refusing to pick. in which case i agree with the hero tbh.

I know the secret says it's a show but my first thought was Tiffany Aching and the quote about selfishness being used as a protective force: "Then turn selfishness into a weapon! Make all things yours! Make other lives and dreams and hopes yours! Protect them! Save them! Bring them into the sheepfold! Walk the gale for them! Keep away the wolf! My dreams! My brother! My family! My land! My world! How dare you try to take these things, because they are mine!"

It depends what you're taking, and what the villain is saying has to be sacrificed.

This secret sounds like it's the obvious, sensible opinion to have. But something about the way it's phrased makes me suspect that if I actually knew the story you were referring to you, I probably wouldn't agree with your take. *shrugs* Maybe I'm wrong about that, though, who's to say.

This sounds like an argument about conceding to some type of negative for the sake of some type of good or just....advocating for a better good, and I'd rather the hero, yeah.

BUT: it could also be the CA:CW argument where Tony was like we can say yes now and say fuck it later, and Steve was like, let's say fuck it now, and since I agree with Tony there, I'm going to say that some ideological conflicts you can't take a generalized view and have it make sense OP. Give us details!

I really wish OP had come to the comments or just put the fandom in the secret, because like a lot of people here, I agree that this vibes as being at least a little disingenuous - like saying 'loving husband wants to give his wife the world' and then revealing it's Darth Vader.

Pretty sure this is about Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger, and if so, you left out some major context!
The antagonist giving stuff up to get something in return is doing so selfishly - they sacrifice their allies time and again to reach their goals, no matter how loyal or useful those allies are to them. No price is too high to pay to get what they want.
The protagonist is refusing to give up their own allies, refusing to give up the goal their group has all been working towards, and actively puts themselves in harms way to protect those allies and goals time and time again.
The antagonist sacrifices everyone but themselves, while protagonist sacrifices themselves to protect everyone. That asshole antagonist is an ASSHOLE for a reason!
