Hey, if I wanted a lifetime of not being able to feel much more than vague meh about anything, I could just settle in the far side of misery sort of depression where nothing matters, without potentially dooming the human race.

This, exactly. I've been in the no emotion place. No desire to go back there, but I could if I wanted to without making a deal with villains.
