American Girl has Julie as their 1970s character, but I think their main character should’ve been her best friend Ivy. I like Julie and her story involves Title IX, which is important, but I think her Ivy is more interesting. Ivy’s Chinese-American and she struggles between wanting to be as American as her friends while still being loyal to her Chinese heritage. She’s a gymnast and her family owns a Chinese food restaurant, so she could’ve had a lot of cool accessories. The best Julie mystery book is mainly about Ivy’s family and even the Amazon Prime movie is about Ivy. AG really missed the mark because they still don’t have an Asian historical character and apparently can’t figure out where to fit one in. Ivy would’ve been perfect.

I'd ask "Are you me?" Except I don't even like Julie much. She falls into the not liking her because she's a main character box for me because I'm over second wave feminism-era tomboy main characters. I think I could've liked her ok or at least not minded her as much if she was the best friend to Ivy's main character.
