actually curious, to anybody who watched it: Is it actually bad or just mediocre?

I would be down for a totally spies live-action if it was just as goofy as the cartoon.

It’s mediocre. It’s the standard CW teen show except with maybe higher production values. The teen aspect of it gets extremely boring for me but it’s a pretty show, the acting is fine, I like the premise, and the characters are generally interesting outside of their teen romance BS.

As someone who is aware of the cartoon (and the drama around Aisha's recent whitewashed character design changes) but hasn't actually seen the show, I surprisingly enjoyed it.

I mean, I would have stayed for Silva cause he fine AF regardless, but it was interesting and enjoyable if you don't compare it too hard to the source. I feel like from what I know of the cartoon, it would have been better to just pretend like 'these characters just coincidentally have the same names as this other show' and pitch it as its own dark fae show.

This is broadly my take on MOST live action adaptations.

Up untill this morning I'd have said "All" live action adaptations... but then someone reminded me there's been a live action 101 dalmations, and I gotta admit, I did like that as a kid.

But for the most part, the best they can possibly be is "unnecessary", and most of them don't even reach those lofty heights.

I'm not sure if I want a live action Totally Spies, because live action shows are typically made with the expectation that they're going to be more serious, or dark. Meanwhile, Totally Spies lives in my head as a "The unabashedly horny and fetishy side of Deviantart: The kid's show", and I'm not sure I'm ready to see that change.

...Actually you know what, please hook me up with a live action Totally Spies series. Good or bad, it'd be entertaining. >:3c

Yep, my thought process in a nutshell.

I won't touch it with a twenty foot pole. The cartoon itself was ugly as all hell when I was a kid, and as much as I get that it's the next generation writing and prompting these things, I still cringe at it. Like this reads so badly as AU-vamp/hogwarts verse fanfiction galore. I mean it /might?/ be fine, but I just can't separate those feelings enough to think about watching it unbiasedly.

tbh I'm only partway through it but as someone who was never into the cartoon (but was aware of it) I'm enjoying the show. It's fun. Sure, a bit silly in places, but mostly it's just fun to watch.

I tried the first episode not knowing anything about it. Never seen the original animated one. It was way too weird for me. It really should have stayed as just animated. Maybe I'll give that one a try.

I’d never heard of the cartoon, just opened Netflix one day and saw that featured. I threw it on in the background but ended up watching it and found it enjoyable.
Live action remakes reach new audiences and allow for universe expansion. The original audience isn’t required to watch.

Thanks Secret Maker!

Lol

I don't remember if I made this as a comment in some random thread or am actual secret thread, but thanks!

I sound like such a whiny person lol. To all the folks who are enjoying -- I'm glad! I'm probably going to check it out and begrudgingly enjoy it haha

But any Totally Spies Live Action has to be super camp. I refuse anything else. A la Modesty Blaise in the 70's !

+2 on the Totally Spies take, the only way they could make it live-action.

I must be really old or really cynical because I don't understand how anyone old enough to be the target for the new show would be invested enough in the original Winx Club to be disappointed in an adaptation. It was a boring toy commercial cartoon in its day, why does anyone still care about it?

(Anonymous) 2021-02-18 06:22 am (UTC)(link)
OP

I was already a bit past the target demographic when the show came out (upper end of the target demo, if not aged out if it, but I still liked fairy stuff and thought it would've been cute so i caught a few episodes, and later on for the snark).

Aside from just whining, i was just surprised that of all the animated shows, they chose this show. And I had to roll my eyes at the precise things anon below me mentions -- and I allude to in the secret -- (sidebar: which when was the last time there was a good fae show or movie? They could have adapted that thriller/horror book about fae... I'll find the title -- that would've been interesting!)

It's fae but make it edge ! Gririmdark! DRAMA! Bitchiness all around (there was some of that in the animated show lol). The source material isn't grade A, but... it's just getting the same old supernatural teen girl treatment, but hey -- that's a market, and as I mentioned up thread I might even enjoy it for the cheese, but...eh.

A Winx show where they don't regularly have wings, which it is named after, is kinda stupid. Especially having to make it grimdark and add cattiness between the girls which is so fucking tired.
