Barbara Hambly's Simon Ysidro series.

They're heavy on ambience and historical detail, the main characters are likable, while not blind to the complications of being... fond, of an obligate murderer.

And... well. Ysidro's endless protestations that vampires are callous, unfeeling, selfish creatures, while basically engaging in an old-fashioned Courtly Love relationship with Lydia is aces.
