It doesn't happen often, as I just realized--it's more. When someone decides to run, say, a "most popular pairing" poll.

And less often on LJ, or out in the open, at least. BSG fandom is filled with (or was) a lot of people from other fandoms who prefer the flock.

The SciFi message board, otoh? Oh dear lord.

Which is why I stay the hell away from Skiffy (though MUCH more so because it just seems waaaay too busy). I have no desire to even watch people get into pissing matches over two couples that have entirely different dynamics and aren't exactly threats to each other.

Then again, I was once in a fandom with an OTP that got into a verbal fistfight with another fandom and their OTP. The only time those two shows were a threat to each other was in the 80s because they were on different networks. I shouldn't be that surprised.

It is SO CONFUSING. I mean, I suppose it's because the smaller pairings are harder to pick fights with (especially since the Kara/Leoben and Kara/Sam contingents tend to have lots of crossover, from what I've seen).

But the big one I remember was the "which ship is more popular" poll from last year. There were sock puppets! And flames!

Wow. Seriously, don't people have jobs and school and families and friends? Because that takes a LOT of spare time to have ship wars like that.

I'm pretty rabid about my ship but it doesn't cross over into other people's ships. Because WHATEVER.

And what if you have several ships? A/R is my big ship, but I'm also a Kara/Leoben and Kara/Sam girl and Gaeta/anyone and even sometimes Laura/Lee. Am I seen as a traitor by the tinhats?

Sockpuppets? Did anyone venture into 'make a sock puppet and flame fic/fanart of OTP under guise of being a member of the rival ship in order to make rival ship look bad' territory?
I was at a Stargate convention last year and a Sheppard/Teyla shipper said she done that to try and make the Sheppard/Weir shippers look bad. She said she hoped the producers (yeah like Joe Mallozzi has time to look at fanart, let alone look at fanart AND read the comments) would see the flame, think the Sheppard/Weir shippers were batshit and go with Sheppard/Teyla instead.

Wow. Hearing about this makes me really happy I'm not in the BSG fandom (I just started watching it 2 weeks ago...only four more episodes to go and I'm all caught up!). Because, honestly? In my head I ship everyone with everyone. Seriously. Like, every time character interact I'm like "hmmm, it would be interesting to read fic about them." Which speaks to the complexity of all the characters and their interactions. It makes me sad that people are miltant

Iirc, I think a lot of the somewhat more obsessed Kara/Lee shippers are upset that Roslin/Adama seems to be taking over the fandom--which, really, it sort of is. But Kara/Lee was the juggernaut for so long, they're having trouble letting go. and I say, suck it up, kiddies

But here's the thing. It's up to YOU as to who is "taking over the fandom." Too many A/R stories? Write some Helo/Athena, Baltar/Six, Dualla/Bily, Kara/Lee... Make a picspam. Create a vid for your pairing of choice. Don't leave it up to other people and then cry when your ship isn't being represented. If the A/R shippers are currently feeling motivated to create, YAY. Now get your ship in order.

See? Easy.

I didn't start watching the show until last spring because everything I had seen from its fandom was so heavily focused Lee/Kara (whoa, I started typing "Lee/Laura"....yeah, I WISH), and I was convinced that their relationship was a massively significant element of the show and that I would hate the show because of it. Thank the gods I was wrong. But I avoid the fandom for this reason (among others).

And I love Lee. I wish that weren't such an unpopular opinion.

...Lol, I'd probably actually like Lee/Laura, just because of the cougarish power play that might lend itself to. Anyway, yeah, the show focuses on Lee and Kara, but not them as a couple, thankfully. I think they make a great team and great friends, but romantically? I don't see it.

My opinion about Lee sways back and forth. Sometimes I like him, sometimes I think he's too milquetoast. But my opinion of pretty much every character vacillates depending on the episode & situation.

Aw, I love him even when he's being a milquetoast -- I love that the ostensible hero of the show is so...unheroic, at least in the traditional sense. Brittle, pissy, prone to obesity. ;) Such an interesting character.

I don't really see Lee/Laura romance, either, but I loved their scenes in the miniseries and first season (like that dinner party with Ellen Tigh, when Laura says something snide under her breath and Lee catches it and smiles a tiny smile? LOVE THAT!). It's too bad that after he takes her side in the mutiny, they don't really have much meaningful, non-adversarial interaction. (Save the scene from which my icon is taken.)

That's true-- he is sort of the quintessential "unlikely hero" in some ways. The type who ends up being a hero because of circumstances forced upon him as opposed to any desire to act heroic.

I think Lee/Laura would be great from a purely cracktastic point of view. Laura as a somewhat lecherous cougar, praying on the oblivious Lee? *laughs* But crackishness aside, I'm surprised they don't have more interaction throughout the series. I mean, she's in love with his dad and spends a ton of time with him; you'd think Lee would be around too now and then. But I guess the writers can only keep track of so many character interactions at once!
