I always feel the need for popcorn when both Kara/Lee and Roslin/Adama shippers decide to pick a fight with each other (don't ask me why they squabble, since neither ship interferes with the other...)

[identity profile] neonstilettos.livejournal.com 2009-01-19 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL, that sounds spectacular! Never seen it happen though, since I don't ship either pairing and tend to lurk moar.

It doesn't happen often, as I just realized--it's more. When someone decides to run, say, a "most popular pairing" poll.

And less often on LJ, or out in the open, at least. BSG fandom is filled with (or was) a lot of people from other fandoms who prefer the flock.

The SciFi message board, otoh? Oh dear lord.

Which is why I stay the hell away from Skiffy (though MUCH more so because it just seems waaaay too busy). I have no desire to even watch people get into pissing matches over two couples that have entirely different dynamics and aren't exactly threats to each other.

Then again, I was once in a fandom with an OTP that got into a verbal fistfight with another fandom and their OTP. The only time those two shows were a threat to each other was in the 80s because they were on different networks. I shouldn't be that surprised.

This is a sane decision. You can get much better meta posts and discussions on LJ, and most come with paragraphs.

Your second paragraph makes me laugh a lot. And also wonder how one could do that or orchestrate it now....

And usually some form of recognizable grammar and punctuation. Also no big ass signature pictures that are bigger than most LJers journal banners...in triplicate. Man, is that one ugly forum to look at! I usually only find myself over there if there's spoilers I just can't resist (or more recently the cast and crew book pics...eeeee!) or if someone points out some amusing wank (I understand someone tried to pull a badly orchestrated Münchausen a couple months ago complete with fake death and "family" posting to yell at the meanie forum members that didn't believe/caused the death/whatever).

Heh! The two fandoms in question were in syndication on the old PAX network (now called ION). PAX had a message board with subforums for each show it aired at the time. I think it started on our side when someone made a post touting how much more awesome the show, the couple, and the fans were compared to the other fandom. Of course there was not only a bit of crossover between the fans of both, but naturally anyone from any of the other subforums could post in any of the others. There was lots of back and forth bickering, butthurt, and flouncing. PAX didn't really even bother with having anything resembling a moderator either, so it lasted longer than a lot of fandom venues would've allowed it to go on. Pretty hilarious looking back. Fandom Wank would've LOVED the nonsense that came from that board. Said wankfest happened in 2002 and ye old board is long gone now, though.

Ah. I modded a message board for two years when I was in college and have been sort of scared of them ever since :p Hooray for the LJ portion of the fandom being fairly non-belligerent!

This is not to say we haven't had our blow-outs. Just. Most people keep their snarking in locked posts and communities.

[identity profile] dashakay.livejournal.com 2009-01-19 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I don't get that at all. What does one ship have to do with another? (And I'm a fairly rabid A/R shipper.)
ext_18106: (Kara Anders Policy!)

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2009-01-19 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
It is SO CONFUSING. I mean, I suppose it's because the smaller pairings are harder to pick fights with (especially since the Kara/Leoben and Kara/Sam contingents tend to have lots of crossover, from what I've seen).

But the big one I remember was the "which ship is more popular" poll from last year. There were sock puppets! And flames!

[identity profile] dashakay.livejournal.com 2009-01-19 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow. Seriously, don't people have jobs and school and families and friends? Because that takes a LOT of spare time to have ship wars like that.

I'm pretty rabid about my ship but it doesn't cross over into other people's ships. Because WHATEVER.

And what if you have several ships? A/R is my big ship, but I'm also a Kara/Leoben and Kara/Sam girl and Gaeta/anyone and even sometimes Laura/Lee. Am I seen as a traitor by the tinhats?
ext_18106: (Sam Hussy)

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2009-01-20 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
Some get on from work, I think? I don't know, I try to avoid doing that, m'self (I was off today).

I try not to be rabid about my ship, but I'm occasionally mono-theistic about it.

Dude, multi-shipping is a LIE. At least, that's what I've been told...

Am I seen as a traitor by the tinhats?

Yes, actually. You're seen as 'not dedicated enough'.

[identity profile] dashakay.livejournal.com 2009-01-20 12:53 pm (UTC)(link)

Sockpuppets? Did anyone venture into 'make a sock puppet and flame fic/fanart of OTP under guise of being a member of the rival ship in order to make rival ship look bad' territory?
I was at a Stargate convention last year and a Sheppard/Teyla shipper said she done that to try and make the Sheppard/Weir shippers look bad. She said she hoped the producers (yeah like Joe Mallozzi has time to look at fanart, let alone look at fanart AND read the comments) would see the flame, think the Sheppard/Weir shippers were batshit and go with Sheppard/Teyla instead.
I thought "you're the batshit one, love"

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2009-01-20 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
Noooo. I don't think they have in BSG fandom yet.

And why does that not surprise me. Dammit, Atlantis het-shippers. It doesn't matter who we ship, we should be sticking the frell together! (to be honest, I wouldn't put it past the Weir/Sheppard people to pull something similar. Just because we got our start in bestiality and hilarity doesn't mean we aren't full of scary people now)

[identity profile] pkbitchgirl.livejournal.com 2009-01-20 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
Bestiality? In Stargate Atlantis? Do tell, or are you referring to human/wraith pairings?

I don't really ship anyone much in Atlantis (I really dislike Rodney/Keller, mainly because I dislike the whole 'if two guys are showing interest in a girl, that means she HAS TO pick one of them', I wanted her to end up with someone who wasn't Rodney or Ronon, mainly to see that confused/hurt look of Rodney's)

Wow. Hearing about this makes me really happy I'm not in the BSG fandom (I just started watching it 2 weeks ago...only four more episodes to go and I'm all caught up!). Because, honestly? In my head I ship everyone with everyone. Seriously. Like, every time character interact I'm like "hmmm, it would be interesting to read fic about them." Which speaks to the complexity of all the characters and their interactions. It makes me sad that people are miltant

[identity profile] graziaplena.livejournal.com 2009-01-20 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
There was a secret here a few months ago that neatly summed up my problem with BSG fandom -- it showed a typical week's fic output, and 99% of the roughly 30 stories was either Kara/Lee or Adama/Roslin. Like, there are DOZENS of characters with fully fleshed personalities in this damn show...why do people ignore them? I mean, I know there are communities for Sharon/Helo, Baltar/Six, Gaeta/Anybody, but they make just a drop in the bucket compared to the fan attention paid to the "core four" or whatever. It's strange.

[identity profile] agnes-bean.livejournal.com 2009-01-20 04:36 pm (UTC)(link)
And here I was being sad I hadn't watched the show earlier, because I would have enjoyed so many different pairings in fic. I guess I mainly just missed out on a lot of frustration.

(Indeed, Adama/Roslin and Kara/Lee are two of the ships I'd be LEAST interested in reading about, because while I really like them both, I'm totally content to just see where they go in canon, at least for now).

[identity profile] foreverrhapsody.livejournal.com 2009-01-19 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
... Wait, why would they pick fights with each other? DOES NOT COMPUTE. What, do they fight over which pairing is more canon then the other? Although at the moment, I'd say Roslin/Adama is winning...
ext_18106: (aeryn sun)

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2009-01-20 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
Iirc, I think a lot of the somewhat more obsessed Kara/Lee shippers are upset that Roslin/Adama seems to be taking over the fandom--which, really, it sort of is. But Kara/Lee was the juggernaut for so long, they're having trouble letting go. and I say, suck it up, kiddies

[identity profile] foreverrhapsody.livejournal.com 2009-01-20 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, that would make sense. And I totally agree.

[identity profile] dashakay.livejournal.com 2009-01-20 12:57 pm (UTC)(link)
But here's the thing. It's up to YOU as to who is "taking over the fandom." Too many A/R stories? Write some Helo/Athena, Baltar/Six, Dualla/Bily, Kara/Lee... Make a picspam. Create a vid for your pairing of choice. Don't leave it up to other people and then cry when your ship isn't being represented. If the A/R shippers are currently feeling motivated to create, YAY. Now get your ship in order.

See? Easy.
ext_18106: (Attacked!)

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2009-01-21 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
Problem is, as one of the few people supplying Kara/Sam fic, this argument doesn't wash with me. I would LOVE to read fic I haven't written. But it's a little difficult.

Thank god for new canon, though. We might get more out of people.

Totally this, too. It pays to be selfish when doing fandom stuff; it's the only way you're guaranteed to find material about what you want. Pretty much everything I've written for BSG has been about characters and material I think are interesting: minor characters who (I think) could use more development on the show, random scenarios here and there that intrigue me, the occasional bizarre kink. Fandom is inherently self-indulgent, and if you're into a particular pairing/character chances are at least one other person on the internet is too, and was looking for it. Not being self-indulgent misses the point, imo :p
