129. I think Zutara is dominant in the Avatar fandom because the creators of the story forgot or didn't understand what it was like to be a preteen and a young teenager growing up. People can say whatever they want about Aang being an enlightened twelve year old, but the fact of the matter is that he was portrayed to be very childish in his behavior. Aang having a crush on Kataara is one thing, but I think they were pushing the pairing too much. I have VIVID memories of life as a 12 and 14 year old and I can tell you that no 14 year old girl would ever fall in love with a 12 year old boy. I remember at that age, kids even a year appart were vastly different in maturity and experiences. That's like trying to compare an elementry school kid to a high school freshman. It's just to unrealistic for most people to accept and frankly I don't blame them.

[identity profile] chriseh.livejournal.com 2009-01-20 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
THIS.

This is exactly why I think Zutara is dominant. I'm not much into the fandom itself, but if I was shipping a couple it'd be Zuko/Katara just because it feels more realistic.

[identity profile] flyingcharr.livejournal.com 2009-01-20 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
I'm actually not much of an Avatar fan myself, but when I watched it the Aang/Kataara relationship just felt so forced, that it bothered me. Yeah I'm like you if I were to ship a couple it would probably be the crack Zutara pairing. XD

(Anonymous) 2009-01-20 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, I think they did remember what it was like - hence the awkward blushes, the first dance, first kisses, falling for your friend, etc. Aang was no more childish than Zuko or Katara. Iroh was fun-loving and a bit of a free spirit and no one ever accuses him of being childish.

And the insistence of Zutarians to keep comparing this to our world with its grade levels and shallow teen notions is utterly ridiculous. I remember 14 and 12 too and how my entire world revolved around the mall, cheerleading, and the quest to have the most trendy jeans, purse, shoes, haircut.

And I see none of the Avatar characters acting like the 12 or 14 year olds from our time. In fact I think 12 and 14 year old from our time need to behave more like the Avatar characters.

[identity profile] flyingcharr.livejournal.com 2009-01-20 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Well, it may be because I started watching Avatar as a 21 year old, but I felt that the characters were portrayed in a very childish manner, and while that may have been more accurate to their age group, a childish character like Aang just doesn't have to emotional maturity to connect with a 14 year old like Kataara in a romantic relationship. I can see them having a deep and lasting friendship, and maybe when they're older like late teens to adulthood it could blossom into romance but at that particular moment it seems very counter-intuitive for them to connect with such a vast difference in maturity seperating them.

I guess it's like that rule or something about believablity in science fiction and fantasy: if the piece fails to convince the reader/viewer that what they are seeing is believable and/or realistic than it fails to be immersive and captivating.

(Anonymous) 2009-01-20 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
I'm in my late 30's.

The only reason Aang is childish is because you see him as such and refuse to see him as how he was actually presented in the show. Katara, believe it or not, is not this paragon of maturity. She too is romantically awkward and when she doesn't get her way she gets insulting and hurtful.

The Avatar and a spiritually in-tune twelve year old is capable of loving someone. He's capable of making life or death decisions. He is capable of taking on the problems of the world. He is mature enough and wise enough to help those in trouble as he comes across them, but he is too immature to be in love? Sorry, does not compute.

Again, this is not our modern times.

[identity profile] flyingcharr.livejournal.com 2009-01-20 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I respect that you have a different opinion from me, and you are right Katara also acts very immature throughout the show.

I guess what I meant to say with sci/fi in general is that sometimes a work of fiction will be believable enough for some people and not so much for others. Though the characters of Avatar exist in a fictional world seperate from our own, I just had a hard time accepting the characters as they were presented even in the context of their own world as young, independent adventurers. It just seemed too watered down and fluffy for me. But again that is my own problem that I was unable to enjoy the series. It's cool that you liked it and could appreciate what the creators where trying to accomplish with it.

Re: falling for your friend

I think this is the ideal when you're older and more mature, but 12/14 year olds don't really think like that.

Just as an example, I was about 12/13 when The Lion King came out, and (in case you don't memorize Disney movies the way I do), there is a moment when Zazu tells Simba and Nala that they're supposed to get married. At that point both young lion cubs grimace, and Simba says "I can't marry her! She's my best friend!" At the time, that reasoning made perfect sense to me. My reaction was "DUH! ZAZU STOP BEING GROSS!" Now, looking back, obviously I don't think like that, but it certainly says something about "tween" reasoning, as opposed to that of adults.

128: Actually, that just explains why people don't pair her Aang. It doesn't explain why people pair her with Zuko. She had two boys closer to her age that she was actually interested in at some point--why isn't there more Kataru or Jetara?

Re: 129

[identity profile] flyingcharr.livejournal.com 2009-01-20 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
That's true. I think people like Zuko/Kataara specifically because it is nice to see people from two warring/opposing sides come together and find common ground with one another, and perhaps even fall in love. It is sort of symbolic of an ideal which we as humans would like to aspire to be. It's like two countries settling conflicts and ending violence which would have caused so many people to suffer, for example. I think this is a large part of it's attractiveness, like many people have said before, the Romeo and Juliet aspect. It's a very romantic notion.

I always got the feeling too that the fans made Zuko and Katara into the things they aren't - mature, romantically secure people.

Katara made the boy she liked an acorn hat (Jet), she mothers anything on two legs, she readily believed in romantic fortunes, and had little to no interaction with anyone her own age until Aang came along. By season three, she was blushing and getting jealous over Aang and was utterly disgusted that the Actress!Katara was portraying her as a silly, shallow boy-crazy crybaby and clearly not pleased at being romantically linked with Zuko.

Zuko too is romantically awkward. You saw it with Jin and Mai. And he, like Katara, often displayed immaturity in tantrums when not getting their way. Zuko himself was not pleased to be linked to Katara.

And that is the biggest thing. Neither character saw each other as a romantic partner. The fans might have, but Zuko and Katara didn't.

[identity profile] flyingcharr.livejournal.com 2009-01-20 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
hmm, that's a good point. They were rather immature weren't they?

Re: 129

[identity profile] banditjoeykuba.livejournal.com 2009-01-22 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
I for one wish there was more Jetara love in the fandom. Jet screwed up the first time we saw him and, by the time he sees Katrara again and tries to make things better, Bryke killed him off. D: Then again, if Jet hadn't died, Jetara would have wound up being canon. XD

As for Kataru... "Gay Boyfriend"? XD Sorry, had to give the gay!Haru response. Even though Katara had some interest in Haru, I really can't imagine them as anything other than really great friends. I just never felt that much chemistry between them.

[identity profile] vivalana.livejournal.com 2009-01-20 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
129. I don't ship any members of the Gaang together because I prefer the idea that they've become one another's alternative family, and the whole thing seemed rather incestuous. Katara and Aang especially, since she seems almost like a mother-figure.

But maybe I'm just too old to get into shipping such younger characters.

[identity profile] flyingcharr.livejournal.com 2009-01-20 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I see what you mean. I kinda wish the creators had just left romance out entirely, but meh it's ok. Like in BSG if romance gets out of hand it just starts to take over the whole show and then everything starts to loose focus.

[identity profile] pkbitchgirl.livejournal.com 2009-01-20 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
You think that's bad? I'm in a fandom where people think a woman in her EARLY TWENTIES would fall in love with a FOURTEEN YEAR OLD boy, I came across a fanfic where she was all giggly about him.

Eh, when (if) I get around to writing a fanfic it'll be one-sided on his part and when he confesses his feelings to her he'll find out that she's just gotten engaged to someone else and he gets all butthurt about it.

I've seen the first 1 1/2 seasons of Avatar and I think it's obvious from early season one that the show was heading in a Kataang direction.

I don't ship it though, I don't ship anyone in Avatar

[identity profile] flyingcharr.livejournal.com 2009-01-20 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
That IS a big age gap! I don't know what fandom that is but that makes me think of a high school teacher getting together with her student or something.

yeah, the cave scene seemed to imply that they'd they'd get paired together, but if that's what the creators wanted to do, then so be it.

(Anonymous) 2009-01-20 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
Fandom is Storm Hawks, characters are Starling and Aerrow.

It's a bit of an annoying fandom, there are people who say they don't ship Stork (early 20s) and Piper (14) because of the age gap, but say their OTP is Master Cyclonis (14) and Dark Ace (late 20s).
I'm guessing age isn't the real reason they don't ship Stork/Piper, I'd say they have a problem with the fact that she's human and he's not but don't want to come out and say it in case they'll get jumped on.

Some people get defensive if someone gives 'not the same species' as a reason for not liking a ship, but then again some people express their dislike of a mixed species in a way that could be considered offensive. I remember someone in the Gargoyles fandom saying Elisa and Goliath 'need to be with their own kinds'.
They managed to piss off several mixed race fans whose parents had been told to stick to their own kind in the past.

Then there's the people who likened Aragorn/Arwen to dog-fucking

IMO, people are free to dislike whatever pairings they want, but they should choose their words carefully in regards to why they dislike it

[identity profile] flyingcharr.livejournal.com 2009-01-20 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
"IMO, people are free to dislike whatever pairings they want, but they should choose their words carefully in regards to why they dislike it"

That's true. It's not good when people start making personal attacks and it's just as bad when people take comments too personally with regards to shipping.

As far as the age thing goes, I guess it all depends on context and the characters. And if it's a crack ship, then it really doesn't matter what it is since it's all hypothetical anyway! 8D

[identity profile] flyingcharr.livejournal.com 2009-01-20 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
Edit: plus I think that as we get older the differences between people of different ages become less and less significant. We all sort of catch up to each other once we become adults.
