Actually, I think they did remember what it was like - hence the awkward blushes, the first dance, first kisses, falling for your friend, etc. Aang was no more childish than Zuko or Katara. Iroh was fun-loving and a bit of a free spirit and no one ever accuses him of being childish.

And the insistence of Zutarians to keep comparing this to our world with its grade levels and shallow teen notions is utterly ridiculous. I remember 14 and 12 too and how my entire world revolved around the mall, cheerleading, and the quest to have the most trendy jeans, purse, shoes, haircut.

And I see none of the Avatar characters acting like the 12 or 14 year olds from our time. In fact I think 12 and 14 year old from our time need to behave more like the Avatar characters.

Well, it may be because I started watching Avatar as a 21 year old, but I felt that the characters were portrayed in a very childish manner, and while that may have been more accurate to their age group, a childish character like Aang just doesn't have to emotional maturity to connect with a 14 year old like Kataara in a romantic relationship. I can see them having a deep and lasting friendship, and maybe when they're older like late teens to adulthood it could blossom into romance but at that particular moment it seems very counter-intuitive for them to connect with such a vast difference in maturity seperating them.

I guess it's like that rule or something about believablity in science fiction and fantasy: if the piece fails to convince the reader/viewer that what they are seeing is believable and/or realistic than it fails to be immersive and captivating.

I'm in my late 30's.

The only reason Aang is childish is because you see him as such and refuse to see him as how he was actually presented in the show. Katara, believe it or not, is not this paragon of maturity. She too is romantically awkward and when she doesn't get her way she gets insulting and hurtful.

The Avatar and a spiritually in-tune twelve year old is capable of loving someone. He's capable of making life or death decisions. He is capable of taking on the problems of the world. He is mature enough and wise enough to help those in trouble as he comes across them, but he is too immature to be in love? Sorry, does not compute.

Again, this is not our modern times.

Well, I respect that you have a different opinion from me, and you are right Katara also acts very immature throughout the show.

I guess what I meant to say with sci/fi in general is that sometimes a work of fiction will be believable enough for some people and not so much for others. Though the characters of Avatar exist in a fictional world seperate from our own, I just had a hard time accepting the characters as they were presented even in the context of their own world as young, independent adventurers. It just seemed too watered down and fluffy for me. But again that is my own problem that I was unable to enjoy the series. It's cool that you liked it and could appreciate what the creators where trying to accomplish with it.

Re: falling for your friend

I think this is the ideal when you're older and more mature, but 12/14 year olds don't really think like that.

Just as an example, I was about 12/13 when The Lion King came out, and (in case you don't memorize Disney movies the way I do), there is a moment when Zazu tells Simba and Nala that they're supposed to get married. At that point both young lion cubs grimace, and Simba says "I can't marry her! She's my best friend!" At the time, that reasoning made perfect sense to me. My reaction was "DUH! ZAZU STOP BEING GROSS!" Now, looking back, obviously I don't think like that, but it certainly says something about "tween" reasoning, as opposed to that of adults.
