To be fair, he was only 7 years older than Julie Andrews. So it's an age gap but a small enough one that it's not ridiculously egregious.

Maria was supposed to be 18, though.

But the real-life people the characters were based upon had a twenty-five year age gap while it may not have been quite that much in the movie, I think it was intended to be at least ten, if not fifteen.

Yeah, with his rank, etc. I'd say at least 15. She also tried to be a nun and she was at the abbey for a while, not just a few months.

Plus, she comes off older than the oldest kids, but not by...a ton.

Kinda OT, but--to be honest, I've always headcanoned Maria as like 29 in the film. I get that it isn't canon. I know she’s meant to be early twenties. But I just don’t get that vibe from her at all. Yes, she has a lot of vitality and an openness of heart that’s often associated with youth. But she feels way too emotionally mature and stable in her identity to be barely into adulthood. Her ability to be patient and receptive, and to respond to difficult situations as called for rather than being reactive just does not feel like it comes from an early twenty-something.

When I was younger I always saw Maria as a grown woman who had somehow (despite difficult circumstances) hung onto her youthful vitality and openness to the world, and I admired the hell out of her for that. When I realized as an adult that those traits were meant to signal she actually was barely out of her youth, I was super disappointed. So now I just headcanon her as being older—approximately the age of Julie Andrews when she acted the role.

This is an excellent comment and I agree with everything in it!
