The bottom line is not the only thing people worry about. Creators are people. They have insecurities just like everyone. Getting publicly called out as a racist (or any other kind of foully prejudiced person) feels threatening to their sense of self and to their position in society. Just like it would if someone accused you or I of those things. In some ways, it probably feels more threatening and destabilizing to them, because they are so much more in the public eye than the average joe schmoe.
