The remake sacrificed the fun quirkiness the original to the point of being preachy. I couldn't get past the first couple episodes. I watch shows like Charmed or Buffy for escapism.

I think I watched maybe like 2 to 3 episodes (I don't like giving up after pilots because shit does sometimes improve), but it was so booooring. Also, I don't know any of the actresses, but in this pic, middle and right look about 10-12 wtf...

There are a growing number of well-written shows out there embracing diversity in a way that feels natural and thoughtful, and those shows are absolutely better for it.

But there are also a lot of shows out there where the writers have mistaken diversity for characterization and/or plot, and where the diversity feels at once glaringly obvious, and cardboard thin.

The problem isn't fictional diversity, of course. The problem, primarily, IMO, is writers who don't have any innate desire or interest in writing diversity elements, getting it in their heads that they want to write a bunch of diversity elements into their story because that's what's cool now. But because their motivation is shallow in nature (i.e. they're not interested in diversity, they're interested in being cool), what they end up producing is a shallow depiction of diversity that is written in an attention-grabbing way (look how cool the show is!) but adds nothing to the story and rings hollow when given the attention it's shouting for.

Totally feel you on this. And I've never been one for shounen anime series, few REALLY interested me (I'd say < 10? And that's not much considering my MAL counts 300 completed anime not to mention those I dropped etc.) and GetBackers was one of them. Ugh, how come it hasn't gotten remade yet...

Oooh agree. This season really didn't grab me but I did like Oona getting to come back and bond with Bean. It also worked for me because it was yet another way that the audience could see Dagmar doesn't seem to care about Bean beyond her own ambitions. Sure, Oona wasn't the best step mother ever but I think this shows she always had the potential to at least try (and the same goes in reverse as, until recently, Bean obviously held her mother up as a higher standard that couldn't be reached.)

I feel like you could say this about almost every Eurovision song that has won. They tend to be pretty bland but then again who gets more votes is related to political stuff and how it affects Europe so in a sense it makes sense but... yeah.
