Got in an argument with someone in the comments on Not Always Right who seems to think that arts degrees or any non science/math degrees have no value whatsoever and are a waste of time to everyone and that also science people should never have to take any non science/math classes but arts/etc. People should still be required to take science and math courses. It doesn't matter how many reasonable arguments I and others give, they just keep insisting the same stupid nonsense arguments.

That sounds infuriating. I hate when I'm arguing with someone and I've reached the point where I'm like, 'This person is a troll. I should just stop talking to them and go do something else,' but the rage at someone being WRONG is just *so* *powerful*-!

Yep. That's me, way, way too often.

Sounds like a troll, tbh (altho maybe just a stubborn asshole, who can say these days when Poe's Law has long since been thrown out the damn window because of literal redundancy).

Ok, the reason I think everyone should take classes in the humanities is because we have a huge swath of people now who've demonstrated very nicely the danger of failing to teach people how to: critically read, evaluate trustworthiness of sources, clearly express their opinions, clearly and objectively present facts, recognize empty rhetoric, make a logical argument, engage in productive debate, empathize with and understand those other than yourself... ... ...

But yeah, fuck all that, that's all just wishy-washy flimflam, a waste of time (why study my native language - I speak it already?) and just the province of dreamers who can't get a "real" job. The only things worth learning involve materials and profit! The only reason you "humanities" folk don't agree with me is that you haven't learned the power of math!

+100000000 This is a satisfyingly spot-on comment.

STEM people who refuse to see the value in arts and humanities are the worst.

And by that I mean they're both tedious assholes and usually not actually very good at their chosen field.

Scientists have to be able to communicate well in order to report on their results (if you don't tell people what you did, you may as well not have done it), not to mention explain what they want to do beforehand and why they should be given money to do it. Scientists who can't write are very annoying.

Design is definitely important in the tech world, and psychology and anthropology should be as well, even if maybe they aren't seen that way.
