I agree OP. I'm hoping that TV and movies rediscover the concept of 'fun' soon, preferably without sacrificing modern standards.

This. Isn't it possible to be both? Can't a show be both fun and progressive? When are we going to reach a point where progressive issues of today is just naturally part of the story and done in a fun way the way issues used to be dealt with? There are lots of examples I can think of in the past that dealt with the real issues of the time in ways that were fun and still dealt with real issues. Star Trek was great for that for example. Why can't we do that with the issues of today? Well, I think it happens sometimes. But not nearly enough.

I think it's fear of getting it wrong. Before social media people weren't as scared of backlash. Now you make a mistake and it's death threats, cancel culture, the death of your career, the ruination of your mental health.

In cases of deliberate malignant intent or blatant racism or sexism, some backlash is definitely good. But in the right circumstances it can be a huge negative response to the tiniest genuine error.

So yeah my guess is it's fear killing creativity and also making it difficult to be uninhibited in creativity.

Fanfic writers are scared of this, sure, but I see no reason to think it's a major concern for people in charge of TV production

This. At worst, they get some bad publicity and I don't see much evidence for long term negative repercussions for the people who make the show, not on the scale ayrt is talking about. The best (and frankly most obvious) support for this is *gestures broadly at all the current problematic media that's somehow still being made*

But the people writing it aren't producers who only care about the bottom line. The people writing it are...well, just people. Hell, often writers are the sensitive type. Most of them don't go about their day thinking of themselves as Big Deals who are so above criticism. They just feel like regular people, who happen to have a job that puts their work in front of millions of people.

My bet? Most writers are shitscared of messing up a representation storyline and getting told they're racist/sexist/homophobic unwoke trash by hundreds if not thousands of people who will remember their mistake and continue to periodically accuse them (via social media) of being shitty, for years to come.

Bridgerton has been accused of colorism. Where's the cancellation and plunge in ratings? Have the creators been doxxed and threatened? Is Shonda Rimes' career over now?

Or... has nothing of substance actually happened as a result because this is a TV show on Netflix and that the outrage of a vocal minority didn't actually accomplish all of those things?

I didn't say every now did I? Nor did I say it was a rational fear.

Plus Shonda Rimes is black. Unless she eats a live puppy on national TV, people aren't going to give her shit.

The bottom line is not the only thing people worry about. Creators are people. They have insecurities just like everyone. Getting publicly called out as a racist (or any other kind of foully prejudiced person) feels threatening to their sense of self and to their position in society. Just like it would if someone accused you or I of those things. In some ways, it probably feels more threatening and destabilizing to them, because they are so much more in the public eye than the average joe schmoe.

The problem has nothing to do with diversity

TV is just shitty in 2021, partly because of Sturgeon's law reasons and partly because of the transition to streaming

Diversity has no role in why these series are shitty
