I haven't gotten far enough into final fantasy 14 to have enough opinion on the lore regarding lalafell in particular, but I did avoid picking one as my character because I didn't want to be fawned on like a child. In universe, I imagine myself to be a grown-ass adult.

I don't think Square Enix really intended people to think too hard about them, and I think it's to its detriment. It's a plothole that has to be stepped around like a "wet floor" sign.

Speaking as someone who has a lala alt, you occasionally get fawned over by other players, but it's not hugely common. You don't get fawned over by any of the NPCs in the game world, aside from the ones who fawn over literally every PC, whether they're lalafell or max-height, max-burly roegadyn. It's no more a plot hole than any other instance of other players being obnoxious.

That is similar to my experience too!

I also can't really think of any examples of fawning over lalafell npcs by other npcs. Papaylmo, Krile, Pipin, Tataru, Momodi etc are all treated like competent adults because, well, they are competent adults. I don't think their race has been a problem in how they're presented in the narrative at all. :o

I don't even especially remember Nanamo being excessively fawned over, at least not for race specific reasons, and that would be the character where I'd expect that to happen (as she's a) Ul'dah's sultana and b) still young).
