I prefer s2 as well! Perhaps not because of any shipping, though I guess it is a nice bonus. I just felt the stories were more memorable. Could be a personal thing where I was simply more invested and the characters more familiar, but either way I had more fun this time.

Transcript: I didn't realize until I started watching this series of videos by the Youtuber DAVIS just how tired I was of negativity in the Doctor Who and Star Wars fandoms, even negativity I agree with.

Because yeah! Recent things in those franchises have not been to my taste and, at certain points, what I would consider Actively Bad. But consuming content that dissected how those things had been actively bad was making me forget that, oh, right, the reason I was unhappy with certain bits being not my taste was because I actually liked the thing in the first place.

Presenting a bunch of random bits of Doctor Who lore mostly out of context in a way that makes things seem even more bizarre has revived my interest in and love of DW, and I'm really glad I found this video series :)

I’m glad you’re able to enjoy Doctor Who again, OP! I had a similar revelation while watching Eleven’s run on Doctor Who. I liked it initially, but it went downhill for me after we found out who River Song really was. Then Clara replaced Amy and Rory and I really didn’t like her dynamic with Eleven or the quality of the episodes. I bitched about it a lot with other people and just sought out content that agreed with me until I realized that I was wasting a lot of energy hating something that I loved. I came to terms with the fact that every now and then, the show was going to do stuff that pissed me off for whatever reason, but I didn’t have to get so invested in taking apart every little thing that was wrong with it. It’s fine if other people want to do that, but I don’t have to anymore.

I agree that there has been a huge change in public culture in the last 30 years or so that has been very little remarked on. Entertainment is massively coarser now, discussion about and reference to sexuality is vastly more open, and it's all been very normalized to the point where it's barely noticeable.

I'm not necessarily saying that this is a bad change, but it has been absolutely remarkable how pervasive it's been, and how little remarked the effect of it has been. And I do think, as much as I'm minded to be a civil libertarian and say that we should let it all hang out, I think one of the real costs of that is that it does corrode the sense of public morality, the idea that there are things that are right and wrong.

I mean, go back and look at the Simpsons - early Simpsons was outrageous back in the day, now it comes across as good hearted family fun. Or another example, I've been watching old episodes of Siskel and Ebert, and both of them are quite willing to take stances against films on moral grounds that would make them come across as absolute out-of-touch fuddie-duddies nowadays. It really underlines how big the shift has been.

I haven't gotten far enough into final fantasy 14 to have enough opinion on the lore regarding lalafell in particular, but I did avoid picking one as my character because I didn't want to be fawned on like a child. In universe, I imagine myself to be a grown-ass adult.

I don't think Square Enix really intended people to think too hard about them, and I think it's to its detriment. It's a plothole that has to be stepped around like a "wet floor" sign.
