Sure, some cops aren't all that bad, and crime is bad. But it's not really an issue about individual cops being good or bad.

There are a lot of problems with policing in America. It's badly carried out. In many cases it's harmful to people it should be protecting, police departments are often overmilitarized and overaggressive, we ask police to do way too many things that they're not good at (like providing social services), specific bad cops abuse their authority and act like pieces of shit, and across the board the brunt of those things is especially heavy against racial minorities. But none of those things make the police do the work of stopping crime better. Spending a ton of time on social services, and running around being extremely violent and all the rest of it, probably makes them worse at actually investigating and stopping crime.

So you have all of those problems, but none of that means all cops are that bad. There's just a bunch of problems with the policing system that need to be solved. We need serious reforms. OK, great. But that's where you run into problems, and it becomes a problem with policing as an institution - police as an institution block reforms and aggressively oppose things that might help address this problem. Even "good" cops all too often end up covering for, or not doing anything against, bad cops.

AYRT - No, I totally acknowledge and agree with all of this. Sorry I think I just overreacted at seeing people call Detective Pikachu copaganda lol. I didn't watch it though so my impression of "aww, so cute and innocuous!" could be wrong?

It's a cute film and I enjoyed it when I saw it in theatres. But I can't deny that it has copaganda stuff in it.
