I just think it will be stupid if they try to make puppy murderer Cruella DEVIL into a positive protagonist. Let's hope she isn't.

Then again, they've made Maleficent into a positive protagonist and she put a curse on an innocent baby.

Yeah but Maleficent's story ended up bonding with Aurora when she grew up.
How are they going to justify killing puppies? Secretly they're all reincarnations of misogynistic evil and she kill them all in the name of girl power and fashion?

I don't think they're going to make her a hero, though they might give us a backstory that makes us understand her. I frankly wish they'd gone more that route with Maleficent and given us a background that allowed us to understand her without changing her and turning her into a hero. But I also think that like with the Maleficent movie Disney may be too scared to have a movie just straight up about a villain, so they may chicken out and find some way to have an ending where Cruela changes and sees the error of her ways or something.

TBH Maleficent is best understood as... She's fae. She's fae and she was outright insulted.

Fair.

Playing Maleficent as Fae: alien and unknowable and "Sometimes they just kill / kidnap / curse children" for the sport of it - Real Rumpelstiltskin business - would have been a better move.

2 problems there: 1) Disney built a lot of mythology on fairies being good and kind and not at all like the myths Pretty sure they're too invested in their own mythology to be able to do a 180 in it. And 2) Alien and Unknowable is too ballsy a direction for Disney to do with their main character. It requires their audience to be smart enough to shrug and just roll with it. Disney don't have that kind of faith in their audience.

To be fair, the mythology of fairies in the Maleficent movies wasn't like...Tinkerbell stuff. They were pretty darn alien as a whole, just wanted to be left alone. I'd say most of them were more neutral than kind, and certainly didn't like humans for the most part.

mte. I saw some commercials and went ...?! we're making the woman who wanted to kill and wear puppies a hero now?

I saw some Disney fabric in the store a couple weeks ago that had the villains on it and "Schooled in Cruel" as its logo. like. ffs Disney NO. I don't care if you're seizing on some weird internet fandom trend or something but this is not the message you want to be sending!

(Anonymous) 2021-02-28 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean villains have been marketable for a LONG time.

(Anonymous) 2021-02-28 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I think if Disney cared about the messages it was sending, a lot of shit about Disney would be drastically different.

Besides, I'm pretty sure "Schooled in Cruel" is not meant to be taken seriously.

maybe, but we also know kids are stupid.

that said you've got a point.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-02 04:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Is the "Schooled In Cruel" maybe in reference to that movie/tv series that has all the Disney Princes, Princesses and Villains as highschool kids?

I really, really don't think they're going to. The trailer didn't seem as serious to me as so many people are making it out to be. Hell, there were even dalmatians growling at her in it--easiest possible code for "this person bad", and especially for her.
