yeah man it's really not that deep... it's bad because she was 100% cartoonishly evil and that was what was great about her. trying to make her sympathetic or a girlboss is gonna suck that's all

I thought Emmas accent, and her whole demeanour were great. I think if nothing else, Emma stone is gonna be great in this.

My worry is absolutely about the writing tho. I don't know enough about the film at this stage, but my gut feeling is that this is going to be "Poor woman done wrong by societism, why do we hate girl bosses?!" kind of story.

Totally a premature opinion, totally based on a lack of faith in Disney and the success of Maleficent (With a touch of Harley Quinn thrown in) and the fact that Disney still isn't over the fact that they don't own the rights to Wicked. Not judging the film yet and will happily take the L if when this film comes out she is just delightfully irredeemably evil and the narrative goes with it... but I sort of doubt it.

Either way Emma Stone is probably going to be working her arse off in this film trying to make it work.

Most of the comments I've seen have been very "why are we making her good" and like N O T H I N G in the trailer made me think that so I think this is disney's "woke for kids, but not really" rep and people thinking the protagonist has to be good, also because of disney's rep.

to me the trailer was like "she's come out of a terrible environment with terrible morals and she's gonna use them on these other terrible people for power with maybe one character who she's close to going 'no don't be terrible that's terrible' until she just goes for evil" and that sounds like a lot of fun! You get the "oh yeah I can root for no one and everyone" and also "I'm so glad she gets destroyed in the next sequential movie"

for what's it's worth, OG Cruella really WAS about that girlboss shit. Her objection to Anita getting married was that she believed a man would ruin Anita's genius. So....idk what to tell people. Cruella was feminist for power and capitalism before it was cool.

I'm meh all around in regards to the trailer. Cruella didn't need an explanation on why she is who she is. Would have much preferred an Ursula origin story which would have been far more open for creativity and exploration.

I thought the trailer looked neat and kinda fun, and I thought she looked awesome and...frankly, that's where it ends. I just can't give enough of a fuck about this movie or Disney in general to wonder about the 'messaging' or anything else.

I've only seen things about how it's bad because giving new motive backstories to unabashedly evil female villains is sexist, because women should be allowed to be evil without a reason.

Even though when female villains are evil for no reason it's also sexist because are you trying to say women are just naturally evil?! And women deserve to be complex characters! Then when we got enough things like this they turned around and said the above, which proves some women want desperately to feel hated no matter what.

I'm totally cool with fan service when it is equal opportunity. My main issue is that most of the time fan service isn't equal opportunity. It is almost always focused on what straight men want and on naked women and the pleasure of straight men. If there was more equality in fan service, I'd be totally happy and complain far less.

I mean, sometimes I'm going to complain about the way women in a lot of media are drawn/dressed/etc. while at the same time not given much depth because the same media will give fully clothed men with a whole lot of depth. And that's a double standard.

But at the same time as a bi woman with a strong visual sex drive, I absolutely sometimes just want to look at men and women I find sexy. Nothing wrong with that, and I don't think it is hypocrisy to still complain about the double standards in how women vs. men are portrayed and to wish for more equal opportunity sexy and also more depth and variety to female characters.

Did the author of this secret miss the info about all the lucrative deals they've been signing...? They'll be fine. He will always be his mother son, they will always be a compelling romantic narrative, etc.

As for press and paparazzi - form what I've understood they never wanted complete privacy, but mostly control over their own interactions with the press (and freedom to respond as they want) - they have it now.
