My biggest problem with 12 was actually the twist. The "oh, none of this was for real, it didn't really matter" thing. It just stripped away all the supposed stakes. The end didn't feel like a triumph.

I agree that 13 was a bit busy, but I still liked it better than 12.

Ocean's 8 is frustrating to me because I think there was a better movie there and I'm not sure why it didn't work. A lot of the characters were fun and compelling and I would have loved to see more of them. Sandra Bullock wasn't bad, but I loved Cate Blanchett, Mindy Kaling, Awkwafina, and especially Sarah Paulson. Maybe I wanted more of them all interacting together, playing off each other?

I also liked that Anne Hathaway's character gets brought into the con. And James Corden's character seemed like he had potential. Basically, lots of little good things that didn't seem to add up to a good movie.

For me, the tone was off.

It should have been great. I thought the characters were interesting and I liked the con, but I ended up feeling let down by it. It wasn't a romp, like it should have been. Watching the actors in the promos playing off each other makes me wonder what happened, if maybe someone (director, writer, producer) was taking it too seriously and so it wasn't the joyful and insouciant caper it should have been.

I wish there'd been more chemistry and interaction between the whole cast of 8. Cate Blanchett and Sandra Bullock were great, but I didn't get the same sense of shared personal history with the rest of the characters.

I very much enjoyed Ocean's 8, but I also wasn't expecting anything from it at all. But can barely remember Ocean's 11 and haven't seen any of the others so idk if that's also part of it: nothing to really compare it to? Though I can agree with your assessment that the movie could have done with more bonding between all the ladies and not just Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett's character, though I did find their dynamic great.

Like I'm not arguing it as some amazing movie, it really isn't, just that I had a good time watching it.

For me, 8 didn't have enough dynamic within the con. There are parts of planning or carrying out a heist that give an idea of character and relationship and there was weirdly little of that. Even 12 had some of that, even with the fake twist.

It's interesting to see the way people talk about 12 these days. Upon initial release, I recall everyone hated it, so I felt like I missed something because I thought 12 was a lot of fun. Not as good as 11 but still an entertaining movie. I recall really enjoying 13 but it definitely did not have the same sort of fun atmosphere that 11 and 12 had. I haven't watched 8, and I've heard mixed things about it, so who knows what I will think about it?

This is pretty much exactly how I feel, yeah.

See, I love 12 b/c the point of the movie (to me, IMO) was to reunite Dusty with Isabelle and Isabelle with her father. So, it was a lot more character driven than Ocean's 11. Also, we got to meet Matt Damon's character's mother.

Clooney and Pitt really carried 11. It's strong b/c it wasn't a complete copy of the Rat Pack original. And you also really wanted to see Clooney and Roberts back together.

13 was a pretty straight forward revenge heist.

And I found 8 to be pretty solid. I think my biggest issue with it was they brought back the Amazing Yen for the "twist." And maybe it didn't have the triangle of Pitt, Clooney, and Damon like the originals personality wise and that was okay. Overall, it was still a solid heist movie. The main issue is you can't have a different crew with the exact chemistry of the original crew. I think that would be just calling for MORE comparisons between them and more criticism of 8. "Oh we don't need more female driven heist movies b/c it's just a bad knockoff of 11." No. We need more Ocean's 8s, and St. Trinian's, and Sugar & Spice, because they're all FUN movies.

YMMV

I agree with some of this, mostly that people cared about the relationships stakes with 12 and 11, and somewhat 13 and I think that was my problem with 8; there was no relationship stakes.
