Damn, this gave me a sudden memory of reading two Mercedes Lackey books as a pre-teen. It was The White Gryphon and Magic's Pawn. I never read any other books in the series (no access to them) but I remember how cool I thought talking horses were. I don't remember anything about the Gryphon book though.

Back when I read Bad Roleplayers Suck, there was a giant, angry split between the Pern roleplayers who kept the weird sexism stuff and the Pern roleplayers who ditched it. Somehow the sexist roleplayers considered themselves the "authorized" ones and thought the non-sexist roleplayers were "unauthorized"? I have no idea where that came from, since my impression was that McCaffrey C&D'd anything she could find.

I wouldn't say necessarily Pern or Valdemar specifically but I would absolutely love to see some kind of fantasy adaptation or even original fantasy TV / movie drawing from that whole vein of fantasy

If anyone was going to spend money on so many CGI dragons, I would prefer it if they spent it on Temeraire, but I too, spent a lot of time in my teens reading both Pern and Valdemar novels, so I get the sentiment.

I would love to see an adaptation of the Last Herald Mage trilogy, but it'd be so hard to get the right cast and do the Companions justice...

I could have sworn that at some point, someone did option the movie rights to the Dragonriders of Pern and there was going to be a movie or tv series. But I don't believe it ever went anywhere.

And yup last talk about it was in 2018, when a new book by her daughter was announced, and it appears Warner Bros bought the film rights in 2014, from Copperheart Entertainment, who optioned them in 2011.

But honestly, at this point, I doubt we'll see a film adaptation.

My biggest problem with 12 was actually the twist. The "oh, none of this was for real, it didn't really matter" thing. It just stripped away all the supposed stakes. The end didn't feel like a triumph.

I agree that 13 was a bit busy, but I still liked it better than 12.

Ocean's 8 is frustrating to me because I think there was a better movie there and I'm not sure why it didn't work. A lot of the characters were fun and compelling and I would have loved to see more of them. Sandra Bullock wasn't bad, but I loved Cate Blanchett, Mindy Kaling, Awkwafina, and especially Sarah Paulson. Maybe I wanted more of them all interacting together, playing off each other?

I also liked that Anne Hathaway's character gets brought into the con. And James Corden's character seemed like he had potential. Basically, lots of little good things that didn't seem to add up to a good movie.

I watched the first season of Outlander during the 7th season of Game of Thrones and I appreciated the way the sex scenes were shot. I didn't really know if it would be my cup of tea, but I liked it enough that I kept watching. I got partway through season 2 and found myself kind of bored. There were a lot of stakes but I didn't feel invested in what would happen so I stopped watching. Beautiful show and I love the actors, but the show wasn't really working for me.

Daft Punk was my favorite band and I wish them all the best in the future post-disband, but man, this is bittersweet for me. Also kinda sad because I always wanted to see them in concert, but that may never happen. ):

There was this one godawful fantasy trilogy . . . I forget the name of it, but the author falsely claimed to be an Olympic-level fencer, and he falsely claimed Ben Bova loved his book, even though Bova had never heard of it, and I think there was a plagiarism scandal too? Anyway, the second book in the series averaged one spelling or grammar error every two pages.
