I think 7 was more like, not "You make a character I hate look good to me," but like "good art, but I hate the character" and like, not like "you make it like it" as much as "oh that's great too bad I HATE THE SUBJECT" *dies*

I don't think your English is to blame here; I got the same impression. I think it's a great compliment if I've done something to make someone enjoy a character they dislike. So long as they don't go on to deliberately imply something like "you have bad taste."
