109. I actually quite liked the dub, much better then the sub. What's wrong with it?

The Big Thing They Did Wrong:

The cast was absolutely horrendous. The only one who sounded half-way decent was Travis Willingham as Mori and that's only because he has so few lines.

Also, the dubbed opening. No. Just. No.

I guess it's a matter of opinion then. The cast sounded fine to me.

Biiiiiig matter of opinion there. People are sort've split.

And, since that (and the dubbed opening, which really is pretty bad) is the only justification that anybody has *ever* given hating the dub, I think most neutral consensus is "Good enough." Not "Great" or "Wonderful" but "Good enough."

109. Well, it sounded horrible. It's all a matter of opinion, but I just think it was awful. Almost like a fan-dub.

I'm not a sub snob, but the only dub I can think of that was worse was 4kids version of One Piece.

I suppose so. I thought it sounded fine. Not "the best dub EVAR" but it certainly didn't sound atrocious.

I can think of many worse dubs. The "Knights of the Zodiac" edition of Saint Seiya, Sailor Moon, the first run of Dragon Ball Z, "Cardcaptors," Mon Coli Knights, etc., etc., etc....

Well, I did say 'the only dub I can think of.' I fully acknowledge I haven't seen every dub ever.

I have issues with the English translation they used. Several horrible mistranslations, most notably in the first episode. It's 1000 CUSTOMERS, NOT 1000 people. Dub VAs have issues with mispronounciations, especially w/r/t Tamaki's name. And I don't understand why they felt the need to translate the song, make it rhyme and thus completely change it around, not to mention the singer isn't all that good.

And I think it's odd that they made Haruhi sound like Daria. I mean, really.

As far as I'm aware, they do do say 1,000 customers/people, not 1,000 yen. Or is it supposed to be yen? At least that's how it is on this DVD I happen to have...

Don't know enough about the song to say either way (although you're right about the singer).

When I saw it last week, they said 1000 yen, not 1000 customers, which is the correct translation.

I have has huge issues with Funimation translations ever since they couldn't decide on a romanization for Hentrietta's handler in Gunslinger Girl (I'm even afraid to type his name because I really don't know what the correct spelling of his goddamn name is!).

Another big issue I have with the fact that they gave Hikaru and Kaoru two different VAs, because it's a huge plot point that they are seen and see themselves as Hikaru-and-Kaoru for a good deal of the series, not Hikaru and Kaoru.

I'm confused, why on earth would it be 1000 yen? That's like, $10. Even Haruhi could afford to pay that off - her debt is actually 800,000,000 yen, equivalent to about 8 million American dollars.

And giving Hikaru and Kaoru different voice actors was what they did in all of the Japanese versions, too, including the drama CDs and stuff. They think of themselves as Hikaru-and-Kaoru, but there's always that underlying knowledge that, yeah, they're differnt people.

Mistranslation.

I guess my thing with Hikaru and Kaoru is that their VAs in the Japanese dub of it sound very similar and it took time to discern the differences, and with this you can absolutely tell straight off the bat. And yeah, there is that underlying knowledge; it just takes longer to be really emphasized in the series.

I'm still confused, what is a mistranslation? In the Funimation dub? 'Cause it's a little hard to mistranslate the kanji over Haruhi's head that they did not touch...and you were just saying that the "1000 yen" was the correct translation...

Translating it as "1000 yen" versus "1000 customers" (the correct translation). The former was either on the subtitles or said on the dub, and the latter is what should have been said. It's right at the end of the first episode, after the incident with Tamaki's jealous favorite.

They do say 1,000 customers (well, not really. They simply tell Haruhi that her quota has been upped to "one thousand" after telling her that it's
"one hundred customers" earlier).

Never saw Gunslinger Girls, so I can't comment.

Speaking as a real life twin, even if your voices are incredibly similar, they don't sound exactly alike.

We were watching it with the English sub and dub, and we saw the discrepancy; I don't remember if we heard it.

I guess here's the thing with that for me; as I said above, with the Japanese VAs, they sounded similar, and it took you effort to tell the two apart, and I really liked that. I know that they're two different people, and I'm not saying that they sound exactly alike (and if I said that I'm sorry!).
