(Anonymous) 2021-03-05 03:06 am (UTC)(link)Grace and Simon found themselves on the infinity train when they were kids. Grace saved Simon's life after Simon was abandoned by a citizen of the train. Grace and Simon start a cult of kids that centers around the philosophy that only humans brought on the train matter, and the critters that live on the train can't be trusted and that humans can do whatever they want with them since the aren't "real". Simon is Grace's second in command, looks up to her, trusts her to an unhealthy degree, and has a unrequited crush on her. Grace considers Simon her most trusted friend but can be kind of callous and uncaring of his emotional needs. Probably doesn't return his crush. The two get separated from the rest of the cult, and for complicated reasons have to hang with two citizens of the train. Grace starts to realize the train citizens are people. Lots of drama happens. Simon murders one of the citizens, which really freaks Grace out, but Simon can't understand why because they've done this tons of times before. Grace starts keeping some secrets from Simon to protect a citizen. Simon finds out and doesn't take it well at all, especially in light of his previous abandonment. Simon really loses it, leaves Grace pretty much for dead and takes over the cult. Grace makes it back to the cult to sees Simon has really lost it and needs to be stopped. Simon actively tries to murder Grace, thinks he succeeds and cycles quickly through grief and elation. Grace is not dead and Simon gets killed in pretty fucked up way.
tl;dr: Grace and Simon started a cult. Simon relies on Grace to an unhealthy and somewhat unearned degree. Grace has some character development and doesn't handle Simon's feelings well. Simon takes this extremely poorly.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-05 04:45 am (UTC)(link)I really like how Grace and Simon's co-dependence was portrayed. Simon put way too much trust and adoration into that relationship. And while it made Grace a little uncomfortable, she definitely took advantage of it. As I said before, I also liked that their relationship wasn't romantic because we rarely see non-romantic codependent relationships in media. I did like that Simon had a quiet little unrequited crush on Grace, it added a nice layer to their dynamic without dominating the story or fundamentally changing the relationship. Lastly, I loved that the narrative made it clear that both characters were responsible for their actions. Simon's backstory is sympathetic and understandable but he is responsible for his shitty actions. He is given multiple opportunities to be better and he refuses every one of them.
Thanks for letting me shout about Infinity Train, anon!
