I'm still angry about this mess of a movie. It's a hard book to adapt, but it feels like they made all the wrong choices.

S!B: It's a decade later and I can still easily go on a 30 minute rant on this topic. (A rant that I've already made several times)

A list of complaints:
(mostly spoiler-free)
-- miscast roles (esp Gary Oldman as Smiley)
-- gratuitous gore and death (a headshot, throat-slitting, and extra civilian casualties)
-- Ricki Tarr as a weepy, naive romantic instead of a cynical, ruthless professional
-- a final death scene without any of the complex emotional ambivalence
-- confusing plot presentation (lack of explanations, badly indicated flashbacks)
-- unnecessary minor cruelty to a child
-- underplaying Connie Sach's contribution

*Adding a gay character could have been handled better, but I didn't mind.

I never read the book, but I tried the movie when it came out... I just couldn't track what was going on, or really even make sense of which character was which. Definitely didn't realize the flashbacks were supposed to be flashbacks.

I watched it twice, still didn't understand what was going on, and gave up.

It's real hard for me to get worked up about adaptations of things that have been adapted before and are probably going to be adapted again

It's John LeCarre, it's not like this is their one shot at it

Yeah, and there was already a brilliant adaptation in the TV series (plus the sequel)

I thought it was okay, but my expectations were low. No one is going to be Smiley for me other than Alec Guinness.

Definitely, Alec Guinness will maybe always be my definitive Smiley.

But I was excited about some of the other casting...Colin Firth, John Hurt, Mark Strong. Tom Hardy could have been an excellent Ricki Tarr if they hadn't totally changed the character.

Yeah, not gonna lie, I had pretty much no clue what was going on in this movie when I watched it. Glad I'm not the only person who thought it was confusing lol

I hadn't read the book but I had a hard time following this movie. It was both confusing and a little boring...

(Anonymous) 2021-03-06 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's what made me sad about the movie because I thought it had lots of potential and I could finally get my friends semi-excited about a story I love. And then people just found it confusing and boring.

I liked it but I think LaCarre movie adaptations aren't really faithful to his themes like....most of the time. I'm a sucker for spy movies of honestly any quality tho

The problem with there already having been a definitive adaptation, is that they were going to have to try and make different choices I guess to distinguish between them.

I love the book and the Alec Guinness series, and like you I hoped the movie would get my friends with shorter attention spans into it. :(
