Calling Buffy a narcissist is kind of like calling a military commander a narcissist for asking his or her soldiers to obey commands during battle. Or calling someone a narcissist for asking family and friends to be there for them when they are performing something or have some other big deal event in their lives.

Buffy is the chosen one of that universe. She carries the weight of the world in ways no one else except other slayers can understand. I just can't fathom how she could possibly be interpreted as a narcissist. A narcissist would be asking for praise after every slay. She just does her job. Sometimes she wants a small amount of me-time, sometimes she wants a small amount of acknowledgement, and sometimes she needs the others to recognize that she's the boss because she's simply the one with the most power and ability and thus it is best with her in charge. None of that makes her a narcissist. She's human. But not a narcissist.

AYRT Yeah, I don't get it either! She's the centre of the show, that doesn't make her a narcissist. Especially to anyone who's ever met an actual narcissist!

DA - Absolutely agree. Buffy-as-narcissist is such a wild take.

It's interesting, of course, how often this was not said about the male characters (at the time) or of male leads of other shows.
