Nayrt: which is sometimes true of shipping, not that you can really talk about how gay stereotypes drive a lot of fandom tinhatting and top/bottom debate.

Oh, absolutely. And there were (and still are) plenty of slashers who were convinced them shipping gay couples made them some sort of paragon of pro-LGBT activism. That's kinda the point - that a) fandom activities are not activism and b) no matter how woke you think you are, you can still unintentionally act on harmful stereotypes or -isms. This can happen to the best of us.
