People think Jesse is supposed to be non-white? Weird

(Anonymous) 2021-03-09 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
IDK if anyone honestly believes it was the creators' intention, but it's super easy to headcanon him as some degree of mixed, and from that point of view to does feel weirdly... like, passive-aggressive? Maybe? To make his new model noticeably paler like this (just compare his arm in this picture to his face, lol).
I'm not in the fandom so I don't care much, but I can see where some of the fans are coming from.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-09 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
da

It's not passive-aggressive, it's an art style change. I promise you the developers do not give a single iota of a fuck about fandom's headcanons. There's absolutely no chance it would ever have come up at any point in the decision-making process.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-09 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
I just that he had that leathery brown cowboy skin.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-09 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
*just assumed

(Anonymous) 2021-03-09 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Surely he's supposed to be a weathered, sun-browned cowboy type.

I don't even go here, but if I see a guy like that wearing a poncho, I assume he's a Man With No Name homage as opposed to like, Mexican or whatever people assumed.

If he was intended to be that, I expect the creators would have given him a ... y'know, Mexican name. As opposed to ... Jesse McCree.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-09 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Could have been black

(Anonymous) 2021-03-09 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah because a white-guy looking motherfucker with a poncho is obviously black coded, right? As opposed to an obvious Clint Eastwood homage. *eyeroll*

(Anonymous) 2021-03-09 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not saying he was, just that a cowboy named Jesse McCree ought not be presumed white on that basis alone

Have you ever heard of this man called Zorro?

(Anonymous) 2021-03-09 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
I think people assumed he was at least partially Native American.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-09 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
He was intended to be a poc as much as Mei was intended to be fat, they aren't intended to be but the fandom took them as such then prized the game for it. (I do wish Mei was actually fat though.)

(Anonymous) 2021-03-09 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
... what? Mei is definitely chubby. Not FAT-fat, but she's sure as heck not thin.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-09 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
She definitely is not traditionally thin, but have you seen the concept art? she just has big boobs and thighs.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-09 06:49 am (UTC)(link)
Some concept art also shows her with long, skinny legs, so the one with huge boobs may not be fully representative of the finalized idea. If you look at the Honeydew skin, her boobs aren't proportionally nearly as big as some of the concept art, and her waist isn't quite as narrow. In addition to her thighs, her arms are thicker than the other OW women, not counting Zarya and maybe Brigitte, who are both buff. Since Mei isn't buff, all that reads to me as chubby, but filtered through an idealized lens that puts all the extra padding in the "right" places.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-09 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
Lmao

Jesse always been white. I'm wondering if people thought he was half Native American or Mexican, but like...you can read his lore and there was never any mention...was it him saying a few words in Spanish to Reyes? Idk. I'm a McCree girl all day (except when I'm on my Reyes kick) and...eh. I never head canoned it myself, i just figured he had a tan from being out all day (and the fact that not all white people are hella pale. Some catch sun.). I wonder if this was a case of "i just want a character who i can relate to on another/additional level/see myself in this (any race bend fics I've read ie Hermione being black/mixed have been because of this -- I just wanna see myself in this media! Lol) " or if it's a "points" thing or for "exoticism".

from what i've seen, most people didn't actually think mccree was mixed race (at least, not explicitly said though the canon for ovw is all over the place and retconned constantly), and the annoyance about this is more of a "of course they had to go and make him REALLY white, because we can't have people playing around with our characters!" sort of thing.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-09 07:59 am (UTC)(link)
yeah i bet there was a boardroom meeting where the devs went "um it's uncomfortable that people headcanon mccree as nonwhite let's lighten his skin", because they are cartoon villains and have nothing better to do

[personal profile] rivia 2021-03-09 03:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Not that I'm saying that's what happened, but corporate boardroom discussions are occasionally very cartoonishly evil. πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

(Anonymous) 2021-03-10 08:02 am (UTC)(link)
they are but the idea that blizzard, as a corporation, got together to discuss mccrees skin color is even more ridiculous than that the game devs did

(Anonymous) 2021-03-09 10:08 am (UTC)(link)
I said it elsewhere, and I'm gonna say it here: I've seen Hispanic fans make a good case for McCree not being white. He was repeatedly depicted in merchandise and comics with skin color several shades darker than other white characters. He thinks to himself in Spanish at one point in the comics, and lives in an area which historically had many Hispanic cowboys. Was this the developers' intent? Probably not, but it was a valid headcanon, so making any changes that steer the character closer to whiteness is going to feel like a major disappointment.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-09 10:35 am (UTC)(link)
It's not like being pale under his tan makes any hispanic headcanons null and void, though, any more than being darker than several blonde people and an albino makes him definitely not white.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-09 03:13 pm (UTC)(link)
there's something creepy in how (american) fandom is obsessed with brown skin colors as signifiers of representation

(not condoning whitewashing actual characters of color etc etc)
