I hope you're able to escape your toxic family, OP, and I'm sorry you have to deal with them.

I'm afraid I won't be much help because the only other states I've visited are Arizona, New Mexico, and Pennsylvania and I wouldn't want to live in any of them (although it was nice to visit them). I've lived in SoCal my whole life and love it, even though there are a lot of problems and the housing market is a hellscape (plus everything turns into an actual hellscape whenever a mountain catches on fire). The weather is generally nice and warm here though.
