I found Arizona oppressively hot even in October. (I don't remember New Mexico being that hot even in midsummer, but I think I was at a higher elevation when there.) Aesthetically, Tucson and environs were nice but my impression of the whole Pheonix/Scottsdale area was not great. If OP wants the absolute opposite of a Michigan winter, the SW desert may be it, but it might be too far in that direction! I also feel there's something a bit unethical about moving to a desert and sucking it even drier when you aren't from there or have the option of living elsewhere.

I spent a winter in North Carolina (Raleigh area) and it was nice (although that one time it snowed a tiny bit everything shut down and the grocery stores ran out of milk.)

Wisconsin isn't going to be warmer than Michigan, but it gets a lot less lake-effect snow.

I also hate Arizona but that's why I would live in Wisconsin
