If it's a completely faithful adaptation then it works. The Jeremy Brett series is fantastic because it doesn't try and put a spin on it. It is what it is.

The moment he's introduced into a version of the story that's taking massive artistic liberty with the source material... it all falls apart.

It's not surprising that it happens though, it seems like a lot of showrunners view Moriarty as a massive villain whilst forgetting that to Doyle he was just a means to an end.

The Brett version is my favorite because they didn't try to fuck around too much with the canon. No "Irene Adler is a sexy dominatrix who's obsessed with Sherlock!", no "Moriarty is everywhere all the time and the most important antagonist ever", etc. etc.
