Moriarty could definitely have been written out of Valley of Fear and little would have changed. I always forget that he was even in it. The backstory in America is the greatest draw of that book.

I actually think even Sebastian Moran is a more interesting character than Moriarty, despite literally being his lackey. The idea of a crack shot assassin being after your life has such a menacing feel to it.
