I've read a good chunk of the original ACD stories, and don't actually like them all that much. For me there's more of a jumping-off point for current adaptations to do something interesting. So personally, I disagree.

My ideal Sherlock Holmes story is one with episodic, Case Of The Week style adventures, occasionally interspliced with a slowly mounting threat from Moriarty. That said, I'm also not interested in seeing the story become all about the Moriarty threat. Ideally, he would be used judiciously. He'd appear now and then, slowly becoming increasingly formidable, and increasingly obsessed with Sherlock each time. But it would take maybe five seasons to build up to a Reichenbach-inspired event.

Give me 90s-feeling throwback vibes, where the overarching plot appears for sweeps week and then disappears again until the season finale. I don't want that for all my stories. I don't even want it for most of my stories. But Sherlock Holmes specifically seems particularly well-suited to it, as a narrative format.

If you don't like the Holmes canon, why do you want a Holmes series? Just do an original one with an arc villain, like 90% of modern shows.

The things I want adaptations of the most are things I'm meh on. All of my favorite adaptations are things I'm meh on. They make the best adaptations because you're not so married to the original that you become inflexible about making changes to improve on it. And because there's something wonderful about finding a version of a story to connect with.
