I think you have a good point but if I'm honest, my main reaction on seeing this secret was "Amy Acker"

Because Amy Acker

Yup, it really was.

Same feeling I have with Cordelia (though less "tragic" narrative-wise and more
"Fuck this shit, how could they do Cordy dirty like that?") who was, is, and will forever be my favorite Buffy/Angel character. I am still salty what they did to her by the end of Angel; she deserved so much better.

And the thing is Amy Acker was clearly a Joss fave. Yet, they still treated her character like shit, and mostly relevant only in terms of her romantic relationships. So progressive and feminist.

Honestly, I felt like Joss didn't have a lot of control over AtS by that point. He was off trying to do other projects and the CW was demanding all sorts of changes to the show in order to stave off cancellation (which they then went back on their word and did anyway). The last season is just really *weird* and *off*. No matter what else I think about Joss, the last season did not have the vibe of a Whedonverse show, like most of it was being spearheaded by someone who did not follow or grasp the principles and central philosophies of the Whedonverse *coughBen Edlundcough*. I felt, as a female viewer, Not Wanted or Respected, and whatever else you can say about Joss, his screenwriting and directing for the Buffyverse never made anyone feel that way before (that's why no one believed for so long that he could be gross in RL)

I never felt he had all that much control or input into AtS at any point. That didn't stop him from screwing over CC so...

Also: his screenwriting and directing for the Buffyverse never made anyone feel that way before

Um...you can speak for your own experience, but not everyone else's. None of these allegations are criticisms are new. Certain details might be, but there was a lot of people pointing out he wasn't shit despite his "feminist cred" even back then.

It is. It absolutely is. And yet, it still gets me. I'm just capable of being emotionally manipulated in some contexts, and I'm okay with that.

I hated it. Slightly less than I hated Cordelia's death, but I still hated it.

i think illyria could have been an awesome change to the dynamic if they'd had more than six episodes to explore it

(Anonymous) 2021-03-11 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I thought the relationship between Illyria and Spike could have been really interesting.

I think there’s a piece of fanfic where they end up traveling with the Doctor after everyone else dies?

(Anonymous) 2021-03-11 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
I liked Illyria, but god the manpain was annoying by then. It not only sidelined Fred herself but Gunn as well.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-11 02:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Wes & Lilah or even Wes & Faith had far, far more interesting dynamics than Wes & Fred or Wes & Ilyria or however the hell it was spelled. Plus, forcing them together also sucked for Gunn's character and relationships too.

And I say this as someone who DEFINITELY shipped Wes & Fred at the beginning of the triangle before she first dated Gunn. A classic example of being careful what you wished for.
