And that's entirely fair and your right. I just hope you're not that one anon who thought everyone on The Untamed should risk fines and jail time just to provide explicit BL for you.

/shrug

Like, I get you. But some of us aren't watching just for the BL content. I would've liked The Untamed if they'd shown the romance more explicitly. I still liked it even though they weren't allowed to, because of censorship laws. And I have to be honest... I'm one of those people who thought it was pretty damn gay despite the laws.

Same! It was romantic as hell, I loved it. And I loved that they did everything that they possibly could to label it as canon, within the tight confines of Chinese censorship. \0/

Agreed. I'm not sure going to fault the show for not being more explicit, given the very real, serious repercussions they'd face. IMO, it's hardly possible to be more BL than The Untamed got under the censorship laws.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-11 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
I get you to an extent, I prefer my gay content to be fully textually canon rather than ~ambiguous or entirely subtextual, but at the same time it's not like these stories are being made with the express intent to limit the gay*, they're forced to or the creators risk actual jail time and other awful punishments, not to mention the product would never see the light of day if they went as far as the source materials do.

Like I too would love for China's censorship laws to not be so utterly horrible, but atm they are what they are and we can't do shit about it. Also I am personally far more troubled by the real gay Chinese people who have to live under these laws than whether a pair of fictional dudes can kiss for my enjoyment.

Personally I sprinkle my media intake with a mix of Chinese and Korean BL(or GL I can find) while consuming western media that can actually be gay without issue. It's not a one or the other kind of thing.

*There are some exceptions obvs because different companies are making these shows and some imo do skirt into bait territory and they 100% know it. Most of the time though, it's real-life limitations being forced onto a crew.

^This.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-11 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Korean GL? D-Do you have any recs...?

(Anonymous) 2021-03-11 05:57 am (UTC)(link)
I'm glad you cleared up the fact that you care about real gay people in China, unlike everyone else who talks about disliking the gay censorship in Chinese media but doesn't make sure to point out that real gay people are more important. If they don't say it explicitly, they obviously don't care.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-11 09:19 am (UTC)(link)
This reads as sarcastic, but I don't get why it's warranted if so.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-11 03:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Obviously people care. But in these days where race is brought in to everything, pointing out that gay people suffer at the hands of the law in pretty much every non-white majority country (plus Korea and Japan), is not a popular topic.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-11 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Hmmm. Yeah, I guess it's a YMMV thing. I am personally very interested in stories where romance just... develops, (or friendship just develops etc.) and I don't think there's any need for explicit text if the character development is sufficiently well done and, in fact, I prefer this approach to the "everyone is gay look I'm so queer! Anyways, relationships lol any boy/girl is OK bc I'm gay" approach of some indie Western media really.

Having said this, I'm the anon who doesn't like chinese BL for other reasons so, to each ...!

(Anonymous) 2021-03-11 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
shrug

I am, when it comes to relationships, *far* more interested in the loyalty, the quiet subtle intimacy, the little moments like making food for someone or caring for them when they're sick, than where the dicks get put.

While it's not impossible to get that quiet, subtle intimacy in a sex-scene... most on-screen attempts are just, they're just terrible. Completely fucking terrible fucking.

So I'm fine when they keep it subtext, especially when the subtext is so thick you can cut it with a knife.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-11 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
Hard Same. It's always my biggest critique of many romance pairing in media. Just meeting someone and showing them having sex is often used as a substitute for actually building a relationship and the relationship and the subsequent plot suffer for it.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-11 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed, plus I hate that these shows are still referred to as BL. Since the BL part is censored/cut out, it's technically not BL anymore.

Their source material belong this genre but the TV adaptations don't. It's just watering down the definition of Boys Love.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-11 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
It really depends on the show and the story they adapt for it in my eyes. Novels like MDZS (sans the badly handled smut at the end) and the novel Sleuth of the Ming Dynasty is based on are originally pretty slow burn most of the way so I don't really mind the BL content in the show being censor-low, even though I'd obviously prefer them to have the opportunity to not be censored.

But then there's shows like the upcoming Immortality (I think that's the title they're going with) where in the adapted novel, the main characters thirsting for each other and being in an actual physical as well as romantic relationship is a pretty big part of the plot/the character development so I'm not really thrilled to see how bland this might turn out with all the censorship.
(Not to mention I dread the influx of antis screeching their shitty little heads off once they come from the show into the novel fandom and find out about all the kinda dark and kinky parts of the novel. Yikes.)

"the main characters thirsting for each other and being in an actual physical as well as romantic relationship is a pretty big part of the plot/the character development so I'm not really thrilled"

I'm planning on enjoying the drama on its own merits, and the book on its own merits, and not try to stress too hard. (Though it's certainly going to be... different, without the messed up sexual interactions.)

(Anonymous) 2021-03-11 08:33 am (UTC)(link)
I will watch it as well (even though I'm still very leery about the genderbending) because I do kinda like the casting and everything I've seen for it looks quite good. But I'm still very wary about it.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-11 01:08 pm (UTC)(link)
What's the novel called?

(Anonymous) 2021-03-11 02:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Attention, silly CN webnovel title ahead: "The Husky and His White Cat Shizun" - https://www.novelupdates.com/series/the-husky-and-his-white-cat-shizun/

It's much better than the title makes it sound (and has nothing to do with animals haha). In fandom, it's usually shortened to 2ha if you want to look up fanart.
