The obvious answer is the people who care most about Finn are the people promoting Trevaro's take.

Personally, looking back, hindsight and all, I think Finn was ruined right out of the gate. He should have been a freedom-fighter, he should have cared about saving the kidnapped children who were forced to become Troopers. He should have looked at their plans to blow up The Death Star 3.0 and been like "Um, what if we just disabled it beyond repair and didn't kill three million hostages?" and then DONE THAT and led a revolution. And then the generational conflict could have been between Finn and the Old Guard about methods and Poe would be won over slowly over three movies. And they'd still have scary and exciting space dog-fights BUT THEN they'd pick up the pilots and Finn would talk to them and win them over and send them back to the FO to spread the gospel of Fuck Fascism and JUST

What I'm saying is I don't think the sequel trilogy ever had a chance and it's kind of a shame we're fighting over whether part 2 or 3 'ruined' it when there was just nothing of substance there to ruin.
