How nice that you actually believe it. You're still acting like an obnoxious concern troll fuckhead. Stop questioning other people's activism and I'll stop thinking you're a concern troll.

BITCHING ABOUT SHIT ON THE INTERNET IS NOT ACTIVISM

LOL obnoxious concern troll fuckhead.

Re: 171

(Anonymous) 2009-01-24 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
LOL trolliest. I'm sorry you can't conceive of an activism that's different from yours, Ms Concern Troll.

So, I give my honest opinion and I'm met with other women trying to silence me by branding me with a label (troll). Nice. It's just like Feminist Theory all over again.

Random anon is angry.

(Anonymous) 2009-01-24 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Jesus Christ, don't be a bitch about about it. You're the one who's acting like a troll here. All childings did was state her (perfectly rational and accepted) opinion on a secret. And to be honest, I agree with her. As much as I like to see people trying to raise womens' places in the world, I can't stand most feminists exactly because of stuff like this.
Can't you just calm down for a minute?

Re: Random anon is angry.

(Anonymous) 2009-01-24 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Man, I'm calm.

She's rational except where's she's repeating exactly what I said in my secret makes me want to call someone an "obnoxious concern troll fuckhead". In that case she's either being willfully blind (to the fact that she's saying the exact thing I just told the entire community should be responded to with laughter and "obnoxious concern troll fuckhead") or she's doing it on purpose to make me laugh and call her an "obnoxious concern troll fuckhead". In which case I salute her for her allowing us to think she's a troll and to get an hour or so of diversion out of this.

Re: Random anon is angry.

[identity profile] bamf-girl.livejournal.com 2009-01-24 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure the only one who's "willfully blind" is you, brosef. No offense, but most people really don't give a shit about internet activism, unless it's on an activism thread. For example, somebody pointing the finger and screaming "YOU ARE ALL SEXIST" does not instill one to go join an awareness rally or whatever.

I agree with childings; if you really care, get off the computer and start talking to people you actually see face to face.

Oooh, another concern troll! All for me!

(Anonymous) 2009-01-24 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
What makes you think I don't do other things? It's possible to organize activism in multiple places, you know, Concern Troll Number 2.

Maybe it's just the people you hang out with who don't listen-- that's called "selection bias", you see. The people I hang out with listen, so I could just as easily say that in my experience most people do want to listen.

(No, seriously, if y'all don't want to be called "concern trolls" you might want to avoid saying the things I pretty blatantly said should be responded to with laughter and "LOL concern troll")

Re: Oooh, another concern troll! All for me!

[identity profile] bamf-girl.livejournal.com 2009-01-24 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
LOL@lurking and waiting to reply.

Yeah, I forget. On the internet, if someone disagrees, they are obviously a troll.

Honestly, I'm not a concern troll, I don't give a shit about activism. You could I suppose say that I'm a troll, for the reason already stated, but not a concern one. Concern troll implies that I'm concerned about something.

Re: Oooh, another concern troll! All for me!

(Anonymous) 2009-01-24 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Like there's anything else to do today.

I'm calling you a troll for expressing the exact opinions I said should be called out as a concern troll in my secret.

And no, "concern troll" does not mean you actually care:
A person who posts on a blog thread, in the guise of "concern," to disrupt dialogue or undermine morale by pointing out that posters and/or the site may be getting themselves in trouble, usually with an authority or power. They point out problems that don't really exist. The intent is to derail, stifle, control, the dialogue. Also a person who lurks, then posts, on a site or blog, expressing concern for policies, comments, attitudes of others on the site. It is viewed as insincere, manipulative, condescending.

Re: Oooh, another concern troll! All for me!

(Anonymous) 2009-01-24 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Then by definition neither of them are concern trolls. They're just blatently disagreeing with you.

Call me whatever the fuck you want, if it makes you feel any better.

Re: Random anon is angry.

(Anonymous) 2009-01-24 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
I dunno. From what I've seen of her she tends to say what she thinks straight out. It doesn't really sound like trolling to me, just disagreement.
I kind of understand your frustration at a few people not getting your point. But, at the same time, as someone who usually just walks the other way when she sees "I JUDGE YOU, MY WAY IS THE RIGHT WAY, I'M THE DECIDER" type of people (and the majority of "activist feminists" seem to be this way), I just can't take your comments to be just standing up for what you believe in rather than aggressively pushing your opinion on another person. They were a little harsh.
Sorry if my comment is a little inarticulate, the grammar part of my brain's broken right now...

Re: Random anon is angry.

(Anonymous) 2009-01-24 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
If one of the secrets says "every time some says [X], I want to respond with [Y]" and then someone's response to the secret is "But [X]!" I think it's perfectly legitimate to respond with "Yeah, okay. [Y]"

Honest disagreement or not, she's setting herself up for that.

Re: Random anon is angry.

[identity profile] simontheduck.livejournal.com 2009-01-24 06:16 pm (UTC)(link)
See, the fact that you say that *most* feminists are yelling, angry bitches makes me think you know nothing about feminism, or about the kinds of men and women who participate in activist work. Maybe go out into the real world and talk to the people trying (in a dignified manner) to get women equal pay in the workplace or something, and stop promoting your small-minded view of feminism.

Re: 171

[identity profile] jlh.livejournal.com 2009-01-23 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Given that there are many activist groups that do a lot of work online, and a lot of grassroots organizations that work through blogs, etc, I think you have a very narrow and somewhat outdated view of activism.

If in talking about race or feminism I change even one mind (and I have) then I've accomplished something—certainly something more than not speaking out. If the only activists who merit the name in your eyes are people getting arrested at a protest or lobbying their legislature, then I guess you don't think there are many activists at all.

In a forum or blog devoted to a fandom.

Re: 171

[identity profile] jlh.livejournal.com 2009-01-24 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm, I have fannish content on my blog, even fanfic. Does that mean it's "against the rules" for me to talk seriously about race, especially race in media? Did you notice that most of the people talking intelligently about race during the recent Elizabeth Bear affair were people from media fandom? Or do you think that discussions about the representation of women and ethnic/racial minorities isn't "activism" either?

Also, please don't assume that if I talk about it on my LJ I'm not doing anything else—though I don't think I need to show you my "cred." Change happens in all these tiny conversations, in people gradually understanding that everyone else isn't exactly like them. It's thousands of people changing minds one at a time—heck, that's what grassroots means. I'm not sure why it "doesn't count" if it's happening in regards to a media property, rather than government policy.

Could you explain what you would consider activism?

Re: 171

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2009-01-24 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Volunteering at a domestic violence shelter is activism. Writing your congressman/congresswoman is activism. Speaking out against unfair hiring/promotion practices at work is activism. Choosing not to shop/spend your money at places which discriminate against women (ie. not buying pizza from Domino's since they support pro-life organizations) is activism.

Arguing with people on the internet on a PUBLIC blog (not your fucking blog) is not activism. People are rarely swayed by an internet argument.

Re: 171

[identity profile] jlh.livejournal.com 2009-01-24 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
First, I think I've been pretty polite here, so I don't think I deserve to be sworn at. Please don't confuse me with any of the anons who are picking at you.

Second, note that "Arguing with people on the internet on a PUBLIC blog (not your fucking blog) is not activism." is not the same as your original statement, "people on the internet don't usually care about what you have to say, period." which is patently untrue.

Third, I think that putting forth an intelligent case and being part of things like International Blog Against Racism Week and keeping up that kind of dialog all year is at least as much activism as not giving Domino's (or Mrs. Fields, or Coors, or whomever else) my $10 that they're not even going to notice. I think that showing even one person why a sexist joke isn't funny, or why SGA has race problems and what they are, or similar, is important. I've had conversations on the internet that have been much more fruitful than ones I've had in person. I can make more substantive change by changing the minds of people, even one at a time, than by thinking that all activism has to be in direct dialog with the dominant power structure.

I understand that you don't agree, but I think you should be a little bit more specific about what you're dismissing, because you're throwing a lot of babies out with that bathwater.
