Maybe I'm just really lucky, but I don't think I've ever seen proshippers saying that fiction doesn't affect reality, or that someone couldn't use smutty fanfic to groom a victim. I have seen a bunch of antis constructing a strawman to that affect, but no-one actually arguing that position themselves.

Mostly what I've seen is people saying 'Fiction affects people and therefore affects reality, but the affects are complex and highly variable and definitely not as easy as 'monkey see, monkey do'. If depictions of violence make you want to do violence, that sounds like something you should speak to a professional about.'
I've also seen a number of CSA survivors talking about the array of materials they were groomed with, none of which included 'SasuNaru HS AU PWP 50K' anywhere in the description.

This is exactly it. Antis like to say things like "Hey proshippers, if fiction doesn't affect reality, why did people become afraid of sharks after Jaws?!?!?!" And we shake our heads and say "Ah, the old and tired Jaws Effect argument yet again." We absolutely acknowledge that fiction can have an effect on how people behave, but there are a million other factors in play, such as the type of fiction (is it niche fanfic or a big budget film, for example) and popular attitudes in society prior to the fiction's existence. Fear of sharks was mainstream before Jaws, and Jaws played into that and heightened the fear, yet still not to the degree people think it did. Likewise, if popular media is criticized for having racist or sexist or homophobic stereotypes, proshippers will not disagree with the criticism because that can reinforce people's real prejudices.

What fiction won't do is make things like incest and pedophilia mainstream because the popular opinion is that those things are bad, and a fanfic where it's part of a ship dynamic isn't going to suddenly make someone think "Well, it happened in this fic and was fine, and now I'm just dying go have sex with my underage brother even though before reading this fic, the thought of doing so would have disgusted me if it had crossed my mind."

+100

I know this gets trotted out a lot, but one of the most popular shows of the decade, and the most Emmy-awarded drama series of all time, featured not one but two incest ships between main characters. (And yes, it did romanticize them. They didn't end well, but they certainly got the beautiful-lighting, romantic-music treatment.)

Has there been a spike in incest? No? Then sit down and shut up, because AO3 user 69420Princess's Thorki fic isn't going to cause it either.

This. I know someone who was groomed, and you know what they were groomed with? G-rated kids cartoons, because they were completely innocuous and no one would suspect anything was up because of that.

"Maybe I'm just really lucky, but I don't think I've ever seen..."

Copy and paste this with antis instead of proshippers in my fandom experience. The proshippers in my fandom corner have been obnoxious about people blocking them because they keep posting underage and necrophilia kink. No one's even trying to egg the proshippers on or interacting with them directly. Trying to block and move on is what's causing the proshippers to talk loudly on their blogs about who blocked them and get their followers to send weird/aggressive anon messages.

Essentially, proshippers and antis aren't monolithic entities I understand, and I'm annoyed when proshippers are seen as near saintly here.

You are lying, full stop. Antis' very purpose is to harass people over ships. People who simply don't like some kinds of content and don't want to interact with people who like it, aren't antis. You cannot separate the word "anti" from a person who starts harassment campaigns. There are some proshippers who are just as bad, but they are so vastly outnumbered that it's impossible to think they're the majority. I repeat: You. Are. Lying.

AYRT

Oh my god what is this nonsense. I literally just told you what's happening in my fandom right now, and you're saying that it's literally impossible. Sorry not sorry, mate. Calling yourself a proshipper doesn't make you immune to fandom drama pettiness. Secret!OP was right.

And you're delusional.

Your side stinks too anon, and your inability to accept that speak volumes.
