Re: Horror movies that have bad critical reviews that you think are great

I'm gonna put it out there, even though it had terrible reviews at the time and there are plenty of proper horror buffs who'll disagree with me: in my opinion, Halloween III: Season of the Witch is actually good. I mean, it has fuck all to do with the rest of the franchise, there's no Michael Myers, and it's got more in common with the sci fi horror of The Thing than with the slasher horror of the other Halloween movies. But if you set aside the natural expectations that come from being called Halloween III, the underlying movie is a super solid horror movie with some great special effects and a genuinely terrifying premise.

That's the one that Nigel Kneale wrote the original script for, right? Which makes sense with the sci-fi-horror vibe.

In some ways I think the movie was ahead of its time - the whole idea of a horror franchise that wasn't necessarily about having the same villain in every movie is something that clearly can work, just look at the Conjuring films

ayrt
I feel like Halloween III might have been accepted on its own merits by horror fans if it hadn't been for the fact that it was, well, the third one. And the second one had been a continuation of the first. It's kind of hard to make an anthology series when the first two films are so interconnected lol

Thanks! I am actually watching Halloween (the first one) with my sister next weekend since she has never seen it. I'll give the third one a watch as well.
