Songfics definitely bug me and I'm not even really sure why. I don't mind the idea of a fic inspired by song lyrics. It's more that when the lyrics are actually inserted mid-story, they break up the flow.

They're a bit cringey, but I still kidna like them. All my first fics were songfics and I used to insert lyrics randomly during a scene. I never thought of how it disrupted the flow of the story until someone pointed it out in the comments. I don't write them anymore, but I still use song titles or lyrics for the fic's title and chapter titles and I like to leave a little note of how I was listening to this particular song just in case someone wants to listen to it while they read the song because I really enjoy doing that.

I'm not inherently against song fics, esp. since there are different types:

1. Title/chapter named after a song, with key verses before the chapter actually starts

2. Song lyrics interspersed throughout the fic (bolded or italics)

3. Lyrics actually used as dialogue

4. (My personal favorite but also the one I can't stand, just makes me lol aka super cringe) the character sings the song in the story as part of the plot.

Years ago I found an X-Files song fic that went something like "Scully was driving one day. A song came on the radio. It reminded her of Mulder. [INSERT LYRICS HERE] The end."

I don't like song fic, but that one set my expectations so low that if you can do better than that I will be impressed.

I think it depends on the type of song fic.

Is the song title the title of the fic with just one verse from the song before the story starts? and maybe one between chapters? I'll read that.

Are the characters at a karaoke bar singing and 80% of the fic is just the lyrics to the song they are singing? I'll pass on that, thanks.

I also love songfics. It kind of sucks because the only reason I don't write them anymore is because of how protective music distribution companies are about copyright, which means they're banned from both FF.net and AO3. :/

I agree with what people are saying that putting stanzas from the whole song throughout the fic disrupts the flow and bad/jarring choices of music are pretty cringe. But I think if you construct a songfic well, it can be very powerful and an interesting art form.

For example, it's going to be bad if you don't have much of an idea for a songfic other than "this song reminds me of this pairing" and you copy-paste some lyrics and then have the characters do something similar underneath, basically just repeating/echoing whatever is going on in the song. The characters seem like puppets to the lyrics and that's super boring. However, if you craft an actual "something happens" story around a song and you use the song lyrics to structure that fic or emphasize important moments, or use the lyrics as ironic callback or motif/repeated refrain and that kind of thing, where the fic's plot is central and the lyrics are used as a form of dramatic accenting, then that's actually really effective.

Personally, nothing is going to knock me out of a fic faster than several lines of eh-eh-oh, eh-oh thrown into the middle of a dramatic moment, but it looks like a lot of people like song fic and you should write what makes you happy.

Makes sense. I don't write fic, but I cook things because I want them tailored to my own tastes. If I felt like I had any talent for creative writing, I'd write my own fic too.

Yes! But I'm greedy and want all my faves to be stronger so I'll use them in my party all the time. (I would love for Myrus to get an upgrade.)

But if Feinne, who is a story character and was 3rd in the popularity poll, still doesn't have a 5*, I'm not sure how to convince WFS that anyone else should be a 5* first.

Apparently made a joke tweet with both the words “Wincest” and “Destiel” and was then piled on by people who said they were triggered by the word wincest?? At least that’s what I could figure out from my timeline.

Like yes, if we’re going to be talking about actual incest, let’s put a warning on it. But just mentioning the NAME of a fictional ship is too much for some people I guess.
