Things you always wanted to learn/do but didn't.

Thought about this while listening to some songs. I always loved piano and wanted to learn it, but keyboards are too pricey for something I'm not even sure I'll do well on. One day maybe... Does anybody have something similar?

Another language. Either Spanish or Sign Language. Took 4 semesters of Spanish (2 high school and 2 college) but my brain was just not good at it.

I can speak my mom's specific sign language (it isn't ASL, it's something she and her family devised for themselves before ASL was widely available to them) but I'd love to learn 'proper' ASL too.

I really wanted to learn French in college, but my advisor said I really shouldn't go for it since it didn't have anything to do with my major and I needed her approval to enroll in a foreign language course. I really regret not fighting it.

Piano also. My mum gave me some lessons (she can actually play) when I was a kid but none of it stuck. My brother plays pretty well, but he's very musically inclined while I am...not.

I'd also love to learn to knit but I'm left-handed and apparently this makes it so hard to teach me that everyone gives up. I have trouble mirroring what people are doing and even youtube tutorials do nothing but confuse me. I do have a loom I use regularly.

Someday I will take fencing lessons. But the big one is I really want to be fluent in Spanish. Working on it, but languages are hard for me.

Oooh fencing is an excellent choice!

Art. This wasn't brainy enough for my father who wanted another academically gifted child like my sister. I was bright but utterly uninterested in academic work - I often said that I would rather dig ditches - so he got a child who failed to launch. Win!

When I was really little I wanted to be a ballerina. Which I guess is typical "little girl" crap but I went to dance lessons and everything.

Which is where I found out that I was born with really messed up ankles that I had to wear corrective shoes for a few years before I was able to even stand or walk because they were so twisted. My toes still naturally point in and physically I cannot make them point outward without severe pain. So there was no possible way I could actually get the foot positions correct and I had to stop before I wrecked myself further.

That really sucks, anon. I'm sorry. I used to take ballet as a kid and really loved it, but I developed early and my ballet teacher told my mom that it would be best if I didn't continue because she could tell I'd never have a ballerina's figure. It devastated me and I didn't even want to be a professional ballerina.

Uggggh, that's awful, I'm sorry. :/ At least I only had my own body ruining stuff, having other people give their dumb opinions on what your body can or can't do (especially while you're young and developing? Yeah, perfect time to say something like that -_-) is just unnecessary and gross.

Ballet is so brutal for that. I was always the chubby kid but I loved ballet. I got to a certain point where it was obvious I didn't physically fit so I quit. In credit to my ballet teacher, nothing was ever said directly to me. Though i'm not sure it wouldn't have been kinder than the pity everyone used to treat me with.

I want to learn how to play drums. But $$ + neighbors = no go.

Horseback riding. Studying art (studio art) in school. Learning violin. Figure skating.

Art is something I can teach myself now, so I'm not...as bitter as I used to be about it. And I suppose i can eventually save up and take violin classes. But horseback riding was something I always wanted to do, but there was no way I could afford that growing up. And I had to shelve my Michelle Kwan dreams because there was no money for that either.

I want to and will learn how to do dances & trucks on roller skates (think Roll Bounce/Chicago skaters). I used to skate as a kid (when there was the chance) but I never learned how do all the cool shit. I still want to try.

-A second language
-Tennis
-Piano & guitar
-To knit well enough to knit a sweater
-How to speed read (I'm pretty sure I'm incapable of this one. I max out at 250wpm. I can read really heavy, complex shit, but only at a max of 250 wpm.)
-How to look good in pictures
-TMI WARNING! How to masturbate with penetration and have it actually feel good. (Not sure my body can do this one tbh.)

Some things I did learn but not as well as I would've liked. To this day I kind of envy people who can draw well, or speak some foreign languages - particularly Japanese. I can do both but at a very "meh" level. I can sew at a very basic level too and wish I was loads better, but I don't really enjoy it or any other handcrafting sort of activity.

And some programming languages too. My dad is a self-taught programmer and he wanted to teach me stuff when I was a kid/teen but back then it wasn't... a cool thing....... so I forgot everything I learned lol. All I can still do are basic HTML/CSS webpages. Even that sucks, I wish I was so much better. So I'm trying to learn romhacking (for: no useful reason at all!) now, sometimes I ask him questions, he gets mad at me for my belated interest. Tee hee.

Also, sing and/or play an instrument like the keyboard is something I ought to do at some point in my life. My grandma really wanted me to learn the keyboard and I got an elaborate toy version at 4 or so from my granddad. It's funny to think that as a teen I (didn't remember any of that clearly but) was still very fond of the sound of the keyboard more than other instruments in music. Maybe one day. :)

To all those wanting to learn how to play piano/keyboard, if you're serious about it, get a full sized 88 key keyboard. Proper positioning helps a lot since learning muscle memory is pretty key. Cheapest one goes for around $250 and a low end decent one with some weight is around $400-500. Expensive yes, but second hand might help. Also you need a sustain pedal.

I wish i'd pursued Chemistry instead of dropping it.

I wish I would have left chemistry earlier instead of trying to pursue it at all. I also should have asked my bio lab prof if hé had any openings in his lab.

If I could re-do college, I know exactly what I would have studied. There'd still be things I wish I could have studied, but I would have gone in a different direction. Would I be any happier now? Doing something else? Or be in the same position? I don't know. And to some it extent, it doesn't matter now anyway. All we've got is right now, right?

AYRT Same anon. I made a lot of mistakes in choosing my degree. I really wish I'd chosen differently and gone with chemistry, it would have let me pursue the career I really want.

Yes, all we have is right now.
