since the problem with policing is the institution, not the tools, that part isn't as significant to me as it clearly is to you. the police were a problem when they started (and were disaffected soldiers to your point).

I'm confused, are you saying police shouldn't exist at all? If that's the case, I don't agree. There are massive problems with the way it is done, and there needs to be massive overhauls of policing and of the culture of most police forces. But there is still a need for some kind of police force. They are massively overused, but there still are going to be situations where they are needed. Violent crime exists. There are situations where police are the right solution. They are just a whole lot fewer than the amount where police are actually used.

As long as the interests of the police are the interests of the state, you're going to have to overhaul the state to fix the police. that's the institution's purpose, so since state interests were bullshit, the police enforced that bullshit. the state is racist, then no matter how much training they get, the police will replicate that racism. and that's before you get police unions. and that's before you get tanks and drones.

that said, if you want avoid crime or violence, police as a institution is not the only way to do it. like obviously we're not going to get there, we'll likely have police forever, but it's fatalistic to believe this is the only construction that will prevent crime and violence
